frick what Obama started with DC. The only place in the country that makes nothing and lives on the tax money of the rest of the country. They should be doing the bidding of the people at modest salaries.
You can thank George W. Bush for much of this.

My wife make 75K Euros a year and it is considered a very high salary here. Thank God we own alot of rental properties. After taxes (shitload) we are in the 1% of income earners here. They make it really hard to be rich here. Her colleagues could not comprehend that I was making 80K in 2014 with an associates degree when I worked as a Controller in the States. My sister who doesn't have a college degree is making over 200K a year now and they can't comprehend it. Many soilders stationed here don't understand why they are viewed as rich. Upward mobility is not really a thing here unless you are exceptional and even then it may not be enough. Many people believe that people in Europe are rich and there are very few that truly are.

We’ve heard the Mississippi thing forever. We as a state are the poorest in the country but we are wealthier than five of the G8.
I have hosted two exchange students from Europe and they were quite happy and sad to leave our corner of south east MS to go back to Belgium and France. They were amazed by home sizes, pickup trucks and just space in general. Also buccees and Walmart were mind blowing experiences ?? we may not have the history and architecture but creature comforts and freedom easily trump those.

That can't be a good metric, I can't imagine Japan is twice as impoverished as Mississippi.
