But, like oil price increases, isn't this temporary?
Good question.
I've never understood the logic of it myself. It's only effective as long as resources are devoted to it. And when the target fights back, more resources have to be thrown at it.
This kind of tactic should be used to weaken for an assault, not as a final solution.

We had war plans?
Yes. Trump sat down on the crapper one evening and banged them out using the Notes App on his iPhone.
Reach down, grab both ears, and jerk your head out of your arse. The Pentagon has a war plan if we decide to engage Fiji.

Why is this a concern?
What are Afghanis going to do in Iran and how does it affect the region or us?

You can thank Pakistan which has been forcibly expelling all of the Afghani's who moved there over the last 40 years.
Shouldn't we be applauding a sovereign country expelling foreign invaders?

Our current objective is to strangle Iran economically, but you want us to believe that more people to drain their resources is a bad thing.
The USSR had the same plan circa 1980s in Afghanistan, they ended up strangling their own economy.
No they didn’t. The USSR invaded and occupied Afghanistan.

We need to leave these people alone. It will always be a quagmire, nothing good comes from our involvement.

Eh I was in Afghanistan. The Taliban is Wahhabist and hates the Ayatollahs. When the US was rounding up its stinger missiles after the Soviets were pushed out, the Taliban was one of the few groups to refuse and they didn’t with the insane justification that they needed them to take out Iran’s Air Force so that they could then conquer Iran and convert them to Sunni Islam. Don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely a sign that things are going to get more unstable in Iran and that can certainly have repercussions, but I don’t think they are coming to strengthen the regime.

On the other hand, “Afghani” is doing a lot of work there. There are like a hundred different ethnic groups within Afghanistan and none of them call themselves Afghani. The Taliban comes from the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan, and they consider themselves Pashtuns. There is a large contingent of Shia Persians in the Kabul area that have in the past been targeted several times for extermination by both The Taliban and elements of the Northern Alliance who we supported. I don’t know what’s going on there now but it could be, and probably is, a refugee situation where those people are fleeing the Taliban into Iran where they have an historical, ethnic, and religious kinship. This would make them less likely to be a new terror front in Iran and more likely to be a bunch of more mouths to feed in a country that is already under tremendous resource strain because of the current war.

In addition to many other inexplicable and nonsensical things that have developed in reaction to Trump being President, a couple items of note here recently have been (1) a war must go precisely according to war plans that were composed well in advance of any action, no deviations or contingencies or else it’s a complete and total failure; and (2) events and occurrences that eventually happen during a war were totally predictable, if it were any other President than Trump of course.
I think there are valid questions, especially for a war that was sprung on the American public. For instance, why didn’t they consider the strait of Hormuz prior to the bombing campaign? What was the original end game? Do they currently have an end game in mind? I think stopping Iran from developing a nuclear weapon is a worthy goal, but we were also sold Iraq, in part, under the pretense that they had stockpiles of WMDs. Just saying over and over again that the war will be over in two weeks and that we can’t have a nuclear Iran, doesn’t do it for me.

Iran sucks shite and shouldn’t be a regional power. It was a barely tenable position before the war and now that they are closing straits and attacking pipelines it is untenable, as is seizing the country and beginning an indefinite occupation, and so the economic option is the best and most viable one on the table. The problem is that there’s no guarantee it will work alone. When HW Bush put sanctions on North Korea he famously said that they can’t eat plutonium. But the leadship is not a democracy and has a monopoly on power and doesn’t give a shite if its people starve. Same with Iraq. After the first Persian Gulf war we put sanctions on them that led to a million deaths, and they weren’t in anyway dislodged until the marines and army showed up. The options are, either accept Iran now can toll the strait of Hormuz, invade them, or force their hand economically. Right now we are trying the third approach, and maybe we don’t need regime change, maybe we just need them to back off for the time being and then this just becomes one more foreign policy consideration going forward. It beats another forever war, and it beats them having control of a water way and the perceived loss that would be to American might around the world

What the frick is the supposed threat to us from this?
Show us your post predicting it. There is no danger that we will import several hundred thousand or millions of them. We don't have a democrat president. Maybe we can get them SNAP benefits over there.
