Advocate's JBE support, under the guise of news reporting, is shameful

The bold headline on page 3 "Edwards played to strength during storm" should have instead been on the editorial page or in a paid advertisement.

"Edwards looked steady as he dominated news coverage in South Louisiana"

Steady? Seriously?

"Edwards was playing to a strength that he developed during his four years as a cadet at West Point"

A strength?

"in July 2016 when he emerged as a calm presence after a white police officer shot"

"Three weeks after that tragedy, a no-name storm submerged parts of East Baton Rouge and Livingston parishes, and Edwards oversaw state government’s response with the same reassuring hand"

These editorial views of Edwards have no place in the news section. I am certain those quotes will appear in future JBE ads.

Did the governor's mansion pay the Advocate for JBE's portrayal as calm, cool, and collected?

Hopefully St. George will have a conservative, or at least impartial paper.

I have no problem calling out biased media, and I believe the advocate to be biased. However, this isn't much. We shouldn't be that polarized in the face of a hurricane.

Agreed. I mean, if an elected official handles a natural disaster/storm in an effective manner, what's wrong with writing a story about that? We sure as hell know there were plenty of stories about how inept the Blanco administration was during Katrina. They even mention it in that article. There's also been plenty of stories about how well Jindal handled storms during his 2 terms.

No one pays attentions to the propaganda rag. It's an echo chamber and hopefully will go out of business sooner rather than later.

When I took Journalism 2090 as a business elective at LSU, I learned the difference between news content and editorial content.

If the paper believed JBE's actions (or Blanco's or Jindal's) were commendable or not, the editorial page should be the place for letting us know. It's an all too common practice for today's journalists to blur the lines between reporting and editorializing.

I would have no problem with the same content published under the heading EDITORIAL or OUR OPINION.

What was truly newsworthy in the story? Was anything new learned, other than the writer's opinion of JBE?

It was simply a half page attempt by the Advocate to burnish the image of the governor heading up to the fall election.

And I hope those articles were in the Op-Ed section where they belong.
