The manager of Tallahassee’s Academy Sports was fired Tuesday after tackling a suspect accused of stealing a handgun last week. The suspect also allegedly threatened to shoot people.
Dean Crouch, 32, was the store manager who stopped Jason White from leaving the Mahan Drive store with a .40-caliber pistol from the firearms counter on June 29.
“Academy has decided to, instead of treating him like the hero he is, they terminated his employment effective immediately because he put his hands on Mr. White,” Crouch's attorney Ryan Hobbs said.

Most box stores have a policy of NOT engaging a shoplifter and they terminate an employee that does. Not saying I agree with the policy but the thought process is an employee, bystander, or the employee engaging the shoplifter can get hurt in the altercation, resulting in claims much more expensive than the merchandise being stolen...
Lowes, Academy, Wal-Mart, Dicks, etc all have similar policies...

I understand that and it makes sense with a dude stealing a Snicker's bar.
It doesn't make sense when a dude is threatening to shoot people and then runs out of the store with a stolen gun.

Like I said, I do not agree with the policy and I believe it actually encourages behavior that will tend to lead to bigger issues...
However, as a store manager, you would be expected to follow company policy, so I can see them firing the manager. I think it sucks and I think there are better loss prevention policies that could be put into place but I don't own Academy, so I do not have a say in what policies they adhere to.

Considering it happened in Tallahassee and not a place like Cali, this surprises me.

Yes. My company has a policy of no firearm on premise. 20yrs ago 2 friends of mine were escorted to the back room of their office and shot behind the head. Now everyone I know in this company has a handgun for protection of themselves and employees.

I agree and in the two stores that I own that sell guns, the guy's actions would probably have gotten his arse shot... However, my policy is different than the big box stores when it comes to loss prevention...
You are dealing with lawyers and corporate lawyers at that where a one size for all policy is all they can see...

Why even bother with cashiers and registers if they are going to simply allow people to walk out with goods?
Scenario: person wheels cart up to cashier, knows policy is under $300 dollars they can walk out unreported and unobstructed. Tells cashier when the total hits $301 to "retract that pack of candy bars". Total is "$299.04 sir." Person walks out without paying a cent.
Hell, no need for cash, credik, nor debik at all!!!

You’re spot on regarding the company policies not to engage. The problem is that in many larger cities, the police have implemented policies to no longer respond to shoplifting complaints. So, these criminals get away easy.

Academy sports looks bad if true. I can see it now people come in steal guns mags and ammo and just run out the door lol
