A thought on armed teachers - how we could make it work

My wife is a public school teacher - 21 years in
one of her co-workers is retired military, Air Force Major
my thought - EVERY public school should have one ex military officer for every 100 - 150 kids enrolled
these teachers would be specially licensed to carry a firearm at the school
this would be in addition to the SRO (School Resource Officer) & would provide backup and added protection; the SRO would be the "point man" and be "in charge" in an emergency situation
so - a school with 500 students would have an SRO (real police officer) and FIVE trained and armed teachers for protection and emergency situations - for a total of 6 people trained and armed to secure the school
these ex military teachers (could also be retired police, or similar field) would receive an additional $5,000 - $10,000 per year for their added responsibility (that works out to $250 - $500 a month in pay - seems fair) and would be responsible to attend training and anti terrorism instructions at least once a quarter - all of them get together and run training exorcises and study and practice best hiding places for students; best modes of exit, etc)
added bonus?
we'd likely get some actual conservatives involved in the classrooms to counter the loons our kids are being indoctrinated by
I could easily see a state like Alabama or Louisiana piloting and testing a system like this & I also think it would work - IE reduce the number of shootings/incidents; because the knowledge of the added security would serve as a deterrent - would make schools less of a soft target
many schools already have ex military on staff that could already participate
what do y'all think of that?

Already allowed in Texas for staff who has a carry permit.
The school is allowed to spend funds training teachers to get the carry license.
The sheriff holds specialized training courses for such school staff members.
The school board gets final say on who gets to carry.

It makes sense.
It would work.
It would make schools safer.
Conclusion:
The Democratic, liberal, progressive, communist, socialist will hate it and fight it tooth and nail.

And these teachers should be able to train a platoon of armed students to protect the school

School shootings are very rare. They shake us to our core when it happens, yes. But this type of reasoning to stop rare occurrences won’t work.
What’s your solution to a mass shooting in a movie theatre? A church? A military base?

Allowing everyone to carry. Naturally.

Perhaps if the coach who doubled as a security guard was armed less people would be dead.
The nuts are looking to run up a score which is why they go places where they know they will be the only one armed.

Everyone with a CC Permit. Of course.

You know why they don't have mass shootings at inner city schools? Because all those hood kids are carrying guns

Thanks for taking the time to formulate your OP, your proposal is essentially what I've been telling people for several years, maybe some school districts will begin to look at this solution, I'm sure it will make a huge difference in stopping a shooting or lessening the carnage if a shooting were to take place.

I think so
It would immediately change school status to "hard target" vs "soft target" and would work as a deterrent

What does a chair force officer bring to the table here? He/she won't even be in charge according to this plan. If you have some ex military, great. It's possibly an added benefit. No reason to make it a standard.

But changing the Constitution will?

Here is a novel idea, how about we shut these government run shitholes down instead of cramming every fricking loser POS into the same killing box as our kids.

That is one pitfall of allowing teacher carry. It would be easy to figure the former military coach and the reserve constable principal are carrying. The standards invite a process of elimination.

Ex military and police would already come in with weapons training
My scenario called for the SRO to be in charge
And yes, make it publicized policy
Let everyone know schools are protected

With constant and repeated cuts to school funding under republican policies, this will never be remotely possible.
Posted on 2/16/18 at 7:03 am to dcbl
It wouldn't work. All it would take is someone overpowering the teacher and taking their gun and shooting up the classroom.

My district has a sign at the entrance stating staff members may be armed. I'd love to see a California transplant's face upon seeing that.

So these would just be regular teachers?
How are you going to find that many ex-military officers willing to do that job? Are there even that many ex-military officers out there? My school district alone would need over 1,000 at the ratio you suggest. And if you're talking about just hiring that number of extra school staff well that's not financially feasible in most any school district.
