My standard is the understanding behind the basic commandments. A society that actually stops lying, stealing, and hoarding wealth is making progress. A society that excuses these behaviors because they checked a religious box is declining.
When Jesus said no one is good but God, it wasn't an excuse to be corrupt, it was talking about the source.
And to go even further, it's about being from the spirit, aka of God, rather than being of the flesh. What Jesus does is show what someone who acts only of the spirit does. Thus why I see the father in him.
You can say it a million times people must repent for individual sins, and it won't matter because at the end of the day it's optional and you will tell everyone, the same as you told me, about the "free gift".
For you, repent just means accept the idol.
What part of John 14 was not about private revelation in your opinion? Do you believe the words of Jesus? Are you honest enough to say you don't understand them even? Or do you need to quote Paul to let me know what he actually should have said, but lacked the ability to at the time.
Is this private revelation limited to the extent to which you believe you have experienced it?

quote:
hope for your sake that is true. You spent years on this board proclaiming that you were one of the good gays when that isn’t possible.
Inactive for over 12 years because eternity means more but I disagree with your comment. We are all sinners but that doesn't mean we can't strive to be good people.

quote:What are the "basic commandments"? You still have never answered me when I've asked what the "commandments" are that you claim are essential to keep perfectly for eternal life. I would think that you would jump at the thought of telling me.
My standard is the understanding behind the basic commandments.
So again, what are all the commandments we must keep for eternal life?
quote:You think a society that actually stops lying, stealing, and hoarding wealth because they are forced by their government is actually obeying? Or, do you think it needs to come from the heart and desire to honor God, rather than just merely "check[ing] a religious box" to obey?
A society that actually stops lying, stealing, and hoarding wealth is making progress. A society that excuses these behaviors because they checked a religious box is declining.
Also, if a someone doesn't love God but recognizes the social benefit of keeping the 2nd table of the law and does so perfectly (according to you), then are they going to heaven?
quote:I didn't say it should be an excuse for corruption. You continue to misunderstand me, which is ironic, considering one of your two tenets for your religion is getting "understanding".
When Jesus said no one is good but God, it wasn't an excuse to be corrupt, it was talking about the source.
"Good" is a moral designation. Jesus was acknowledging that only God is truly good because only He is perfectly moral. No one who sins can be called "good".
quote:He claimed to be God and accepted worship. You think that's someone who is of the spirit and has the Father in him?
And to go even further, it's about being from the spirit, aka of God, rather than being of the flesh. What Jesus does is show what someone who acts only of the spirit does. Thus why I see the father in him.
quote:It's not optional because accepting the free gift comes from a changed heart. The changed heart produces changed desires and affections which lead to love for God, hatred of sin, and repentance unto good works (obedience). You keep ignoring what I'm telling you. You need to stop, because either you truly lack understanding, or you are willfully lying about me and what I believe, which is a violation of the 9th commandment.
You can say it a million times people must repent for individual sins, and it won't matter because at the end of the day it's optional and you will tell everyone, the same as you told me, about the "free gift".
quote:No, it means turning away from sin and turning to obedience by faith in Jesus.
For you, repent just means accept the idol.
quote:In John 14, Jesus was saying that He would send the Holy Spirit to His disciples so that they would remember all that Jesus taught them. Why? So they could teach others, in alignment with Matthew 28 and "the great commission". The Spirit was given to the apostles at first for that special purpose, but then given to all believers to comfort them, guide them and lead them through the word of God. Jesus did not say that the Spirit would teach apart from Jesus' teachings but alongside them, because the Spirit is His Spirit.

quote:I'm not following you. When did I claim to have a private revelation? You are the one claiming that.
Is this private revelation limited to the extent to which you believe you have experienced it?
