Went to the DMZ twice while I was at Osan. Would be interesting to see it from the other side.

I went in through China. There is usually one window a year or so when Americans can get in, and it's during the Arirang games in late summer. I went in May, which means that I wasn't going during that window, and thus my passport was not shown. It cost me a pretty penny in bribes and I do have some guilt about where that money went to.
That is really cool!

I'm assuming by now all the grandfathered Cuban employees who used that gate have retired?

tigerpride, you mentioned that you've talked to defectors. two questions, did they really believe the cult of personality things they were taught about kim jong il and if so, how did they take finding out it was false?

They believe it to a point, as it's all they've ever known. They are also very crafty people who know what it takes to survive there. The best comparison to make would be an atheist politician in a southern district. They may personally think a certain way, but they'll toe the line and be in church every Sunday morning. Also, every family will have pictures of Kim Jong Il and Il Sung in their home. While they do show respect, it's more of a formality than anything else.

When they first get to the South, it has usually been a very long and hard journey. They take time to adjust, and the South Korean government takes time to vet them to make sure they aren't spies. They do say that some things surprise them, such as the introduction of English words into the Korean language, coffee shops everywhere, the way SK women dress, etc.

I'm on my phone right now, but there are some videos of interviews that I'll post here later.

The two situations are very different. Nixon and Kissinger first met with Mao because they wanted to avert a war between China and the Soviets and play the two off of each other. Also, Mao had indicated a willingness to end the Cultural Revolution and at least listen to the reformist ideas of the Zhou Enlai/Deng Xiaoping camp.

North Korea will get the stick for as long as they remain militarily and economically hostile.

As far as world history goes Nixon to China may have been the most important event of the second half of the twentieth century.

I remember an interview with a defector back in 1985, and when he asked what was the most shocking difference between the two countries he said it was the pigeons. In North Korea the pigeons were thin and afraid of humans who hunted them for food. In South Korea the pigeons were fat and would allow humans to get close to them. When you think about it that does say a lot about the two societies.

I've always found that part of Chinese history pretty fascinating.
