A masters level class on a rhetorical trick used by the left

The rhetorical trick described is the use of FLOATING IDENTIFIERS. To be fair, its used by all sides and in many ways, but it particularly used in extreme ways by the left, because it’s very useful as an appeal to emotion but disguised as logic.

Yes, please take time to watch it. It is essential that these tactics and rhetorical tricks get named. It makes them much easier to identify and to teach to others.

okay... I'm 13 min in to a 23 min video.
He started his video with a both sides argument... yet all (to 13m) of his examples are lefties. Hmmm..?

Okay, finished the video.
I like the tactics he points out- It's those things you know but can't articulate and his explaining them is awesome.
I'm really confused as to why he led with both sides though, because the entire video was progressive ideology abusing language, thought and ideas.

I didn’t think he leaned too hard on the both sides do it, just an acknowledgment that this wasn’t an exclusively left wing thing.
It’s not unusual to rely on floating identifiers when speaking casually about emotional topics or in every day speech. It’s even normal to use them as shortcuts in brief political exchanges or political messages.
But it seems the left weaponizes the language of politics by using floating identifiers in just about all of their rhetorical discourse. It’s an important element of the motte and bailey logic fallacy.
I really think it’s THE magic ingredient that allows for the curtain of the oppressor/oppressed liberal mindset to be used to cloak their false narrative.
You cannot look too deeply behind these floating identifiers for logic or else the feeble man behind the curtain is exposed.

You're right... it was a blurb at the beginning, that's all. I think I'm hyper sensitive right now to the both sides thing- that's on me.

Both sides do use it, just lefty politicians use it more. How many times have you heard growing up, " real men ____" or " you ain't a man unless____"
Christians use the tactic on this board weekly.
Republicans describe anyone that does anything they like as a true hero or real american.

Great video. Thanks for the share. It's something I've long picked up on the left's arguments but never heard the phrase floating identifier. When in any conversation with a leftie if you apply logic (logos) it crumbles fairly quickly. This is something Charlie knew as well and why he dominated his debates so easily.
Another tactic the left often uses is relying solely and entirely on ethos aka the "credibility" of the speaker of their argument as morally superior thus supplanting any logic that you try to apply to it. "Economist say" "Doctors say" when these experts are easily cherry picked.
It's my humble opinion why the deaths of Charlie and Iryna are so consequential as they can be easily invoked to crumble any ethos or pathos applied by the left. It's also why they fight so hard to make the shooter MAGA because they lose their ethos and pathos.

The left needs that hate to win their arguments. The fascist, nazi, racist, sexist, phobic language are their tools. Without it they have little to stand on. It will be interesting to see how long they wait after Charlie's death to return to it.
