It isn't generosity or charity that steals money from people to give it to the less fortunate. Generosity, and charity are personal strengths that come from voluntary interactions. Anyone can pretend to be generous and charitable with other people's money and the government's force behind them. It takes a truly brave person to willingly have those characteristics and act on them.

Who doesn't want people to have those things?

I agree with her. People throw out the word "compassionate" in this situation as if it means something. It is a hollow usage of the word.
It isn't compassionate unless there is personal choice. Forcing someone to act in a way that you deem appropriate does not make you or the other individual compassionate.
Well spoken. Thank you.

By and large, the liberals I know are compassionate so they can make a big deal out of it and congratulate themselves on what wonderful human beings they are.
The people I know who are more conservative don't make a fuss over their compassion. They're compassionate because it's just the right thing to do.
Just something I've observed over the years.

quote:Not sure if its a right/left thing. But the most generous person I ever knew... Was a close friend that we cycled with. It wasn't until after he died that people started telling stories of his generosity. None of us ever knew how much he did for so many.

True charity is anonymous.

she's not bad to look at, either

To me, it looks like one worries about others vs one who is worried about their own money. Perfect view of Liberals and Republicans if you ask me.

Not quite. It's about freedom. Conservatives believe that if you want to give to charity or be charitable, then that is your right. It is also your right to decide not to be.
Liberals believe that what they do is right, so everyone should have to do it. Thus, they believe it is right for the government to force people to do what liberals believe is right.

you can accomplish the 1st with government.
You can accomplish the second by yourself for hardly anyone except your family.

yeah i made a thread on that last year. john stossel has a pretty famous interview with ted turner when turner gave like $1B to the UN. that $1B would help a lot more people if it were invested in a successful company
Yeah, great idea. And then we can make said company promise that they won't take the billion and run. If you still believe in the goodwill of American corporations at this stage of the game then jaded isn't in your nature.

I want everyone to have those things too. Pretty fricked up to think only those who advocate taxing and spending are the only ones who have compassion.
