Good stuff from Jonah Keri here about Gattis, and particularly about the rise of Paul Maholm.

LINK

quote:

Per ESPN Stats & Info, Maholm is the fourth major league pitcher in the expansion era to win his first three starts of a season without allowing a run. The other pitchers to do so since 1961 are Luis Tiant (1966 Indians), Woody Williams (2003 Cardinals), and Zack Greinke (2009 Royals).

I can't believe how damn good he's been. He's gone from a nothing lefty to purely dominant, and I'm not sure there's any good explanation.

I'll admit I underestimate Maholm last year, but he's been very impressive. I can't believe I actually wanted to keep Hanson over Maholm.

I was vocally skeptical of acquiring him, but he's a different guy these days.

I don't know if he'll keep up this level of domination, but damn, even some regression and he'll be very good.

With McCann expecting to return in a couple weeks, it's time to start thinking about how we should handle the catching situation. I think Gattis has been too good to bench, and think we should platoon him and McCann in a traditional lefty-righty platoon, while allowing Laird to continue to catch Teheran. Gattis can also play a little 1B and left field and will be our first bat off the bench when McCann or Laird is behind the dish.

This means Schafer will need to be traded, and I bet there are plenty of teams who will come calling for his services.

Thoughts?

I'm a little worried McCann might come in and be really cold at the plate.

Schaeffer would probably be a good trade option, but you can't expect to get a lot from him.

I've got to go buy more lube. Way more fapping than I'm used to at this point in the season.

It's so tricky.

I agree, you can't just bench Gattis now. He's hitting too well and his defense has not been nearly as bad as people initially suggested. It's too bad he can't play 3B.

I like your idea. I hope Mac would be okay with that. My only worry is that he's kinda the "team leader," so he may not respond well to being told you don't play every day. Then again, he probably wants to win more than anything and playing against RHP only will likely make his numbers look better for a good contract next season.

This is pure speculation but is it possible that Maholm is pitching with more focus and purpose since he's pitching on an actual winning team for the first time in his career?

I'm glad I was in the pro-Maholm group last year. Not that I saw this coming or anything, but I thought he was a great value for the money.

I think Gattis should definitely platoon with McCann, but all this talk of him playing first base is ridiculous. No way in hell I am taking at bats away Freddie to put Gattis at 1B.

Probably helps some.

Keri breaks down how he's changed his pitch types and become more unpredictable too.

Let's not forget, Maholm was a 1st round pick (8th overall). So he's not an un-talented guy. Maybe it just took him this long to figure it all out.

I am okay with giving McCann his chance to earn the starting C spot but if he comes out the gates and can't hit the ball, we better not think twice about putting Gattis in there (as the starting C) going forward.

We all know Mac is gone regardless of how he hits this season (I pray to god our FO knows this), we shouldn't be worried about hurting his feelings.

Hell the more I think about, the more we need to tell McCann that if he wants to be the starting catcher, he is going to have to earn it and out hit Gattis.

could McCann be in play for a trade to a contender needing C help if the price is right?
