According to Jay Wilson, D3 will not have a ladder.

It's probably already in use, but that doesn't matter - battletag's automatically have a numerical identifier attached at the end, which serves as a diacritical marker for a given player.
Players can therefore select any name they want without worrying about whether or not it's taken.

I've honestly never done hardcore before, and never had in interest in it. But the idea of players being able to use real cash to buy shite from player auctions really, REALLY irks me. I don't like the idea at all, and I'm worried that in a matter of 6 months, some douchenozzle than can afford to drop $5k into a game will do just that and be geared out as frick, whereas poor 'ol Hulkk will be stuck with some decent equipment but can't compete. I used to play a game where real money could be used to buy game currency (obviously that's not quite the case in D3), but it got to a point where you couldn't even be competitive if you didn't spend real cash. Didn't matter how skilled you were.
