Napa and San Francisco

What price range hotels.....3* 4*......casual or fine dining. What about casual for lunch and fine dining for dinner. Rent a car at SFO and drive to Napa. You can get there in a couple of hours. Stay two nights drive back to SF and turn your rental car in downtown before you leave. Don't take it to the AP. Too much trouble. Avis has a good location downtown close to Ritz Carlton.

Where do you want to stay in Napa. My suggestion is St. Helena. I will provide more when you answer the above.

We'd like a nice hotel but more boutique than expensive. As for napa, we were thinking bed and breakfast. I don't plan on being at the hotel that much when we're in the city.

As for food, we just want good--who cares about expensive or cheap. Let's get some good food!

We will rent a car, probably downtown, and head to Napa for an evening (probably two days total)

We're doing Friday-Tuesday (so basically 4 nights)

V satuii ( sp)? Winery was cool in napa. They also had a nice market to buy bread cheese meats and salads. After wine tasting pick out a bottle and sit in the cellar amongst the many wine barrels and have lunch. We also did the 17 mile pebble beach drive then continued to drive to Big Sur. truly breathtaking

we stayed with friends in Oakland and drove in so I can't contribute to this. sorry bud.

go to the art museum across the street from the california academy of the sciences, maybe De Young is the name? there are amazing views of the city from the top floor observatory area.

One of the best restaurants I've ever experienced!

The chicken paillard is something I'll never forget.

Just make sure you go during daylight. There's a nearby park that scared the shite out of me walking back to my car.

I enjoyed both, but I much prefered the scene-- and more importantly, the wine-- in Sonoma.

If you decide on Sonoma, and you're a beer lover, you're a fool to not make a stop by Russian River and Flavor Bistro (Moonlight Brewing) in Santa Rosa. Wineries I'd particularly recommend are Copain, A. Rafanelli, Dave Coffaro, and Rochioli. Do yourself a favor and have dinner at Scopa. On certain nights of the week, they have folks from the local wineries on hand to feature their wine and discuss with the diners.

If you do go to Napa, I'd disagree with the poster who recommended V. Sattui, unless you like cookie cutter wine and want to contend with hundreds of tourists for an "I heart vino" keychain. Joseph Phelps is the one can't miss I'd recommend in Napa, but be sure to make a reservation. The view is spectacular.

For dining in Napa, don't miss The Fatted Calf, which is a charcuterie located behind the oxbow market, for lunch. C Casa, which is in the market has some really outstanding mexican, and you can sit out on the deck and enjoy the sunshine while you're eating. I seriously doubt you'll get reservations for French Laundry in April, but you can try. If you do, be prepared to pay for it, but it's an experience worth the price, IMO. There's also Ad Hoc, Morimoto, and Bottega, which would all be good dinner choices.
