Wrangler unlimited owners - soft top vs hard top?

Question for wrangler unlimited owners. Would you recommend a soft top or hard top? This will be a weekend driver/fun vehicle for the most part. I feel like a soft top would maximize the Jeep experience but the hard tops also seem fairly easy to take off

I’m not an owner but ride quite a bit with my buddies. Soft for sure.

my '06 has a soft top and it doesn't flap like my '95 did. you can have an actual conversation with someone inside going down the road.
road in a JK earlier this week and it was the same way so i would think it's personal preference.

If I were to get one with a hardtop what kinda price would I be looking at for a soft top and how hard is it to install?

Daughter has both. She uses the soft top in the summer and hard top in the winter. SIL built a pulley system under their carport. Daughter can load or unload the hard top by herself.

Mine only came with a hard top but I found a soft top on Craigslist that was never used with the windows still in the box for $400 on Craigslist. Lots of owners got the dual top option and never put the soft top on so you can find them out there.
Not that hard to change tops just need a hand to remove the hardtop.
What did you get ?

Haven’t gotten anything yet, but looking pretty serious at a 2014 with 35k miles... there’s actually 2 in town with about the same miles and close to the same price ... the one with the hard top is listed a little cheaper but I’m sure I can get the other dealership down

What kind? Sport, Sahara, Rubicon?

Yup... went and looked at the one at team and it’s clean but does need new tires.
Tried to look at the other but it was in NOLA and they’re going to bring it to BR soon

I wouldn’t get hung up on the tops, you can change that easily. Instead focus on which one is the cleaner vehicle. The one at Team looks to be the nicer of the two IMO. The one at Mazda has miss matched tires. If the previous owner half assed that what else did he half arse while owning it ? I wouldn’t worry about the one at Team needing new tires. Use that in negotiating the price. You can pick up a set of new JL Rubicon take off wheels and tires for what it would cost for just new tires. That would instantly upgrade the Jeeps look from those sport wheels and tires.
My current Jeep was just like the one at Team when I bought it minus those funky side steps. Same color just 4 years newer. First thing I did was find a set of Rubi take offs.

Good advice... thanks... the one at team was very clean. Definitely didn’t look like it had ever been off road. They low balled me pretty bad on my trade in though so I’ll have to see if they really want to deal or not

I have a soft top, love it, takes about 5 min to take off or put up, always stays with you if you want it to.
Havent dealt with a hard top but have heard they are heavy and a two man job to take off unless you get a winch on your garage ceiling

quote:I'd be leery of not having a top with the vehicle at all times; we get a pretty good amount of rain when it's not forecast. I've got a convertible, and have been caught a few times... and that's a pain in the arse to deal with. And that's while actually having a top you can put back up anywhere.

If it’s hot out, the exposed sun makes it 10xs worse.
I ride top on doors off 9 months out of year. Hard top is better for this.

2000 TJ; soft top. I like it.

Go with both, can get aftermarket tops if you don't want to get mopar because of cost. The only thing to consider when taking off the hard top is the weight distribution is really offcenter favoring the back glass side. I have had both on my Jeeps and switch them out for seasons (hard top is nicer for winter here in VA).

Soft tops are pretty quiet these days. I put a frameless trektop from bestop on my TJ. Don’t have to deal with hardware as much since it uses the roll cage for support. And they’re tight as a drum and don’t flap like they did in the old YJs. I could take it off in under five minutes. I had a hard top that I would run from November to February on my TJ. A hoist in the garage is a must if removing it by yourself. But I would usually just grab my neighbor and we could take it off more quickly. They’re heavy but not unmanageable.
