Looking to add a small winch to the front of my little jon boat to get over and into tight places on the river I hunt. Due to space restrictions, I've been looking at this product which includes a spotlight which I also need:

They are proud of it as it goes over the $600 mark for the light and winch combo. Figured there'd be some folks on here that had some other options.

My duck boat had a harbor freight winch attached to a small receiver style hitch I had made out of 2 inch square tube and welded to front deck of boat. I would get to the levee, pull winch out of dry box, slip into reciever, use jumper cables to attach to battery posts and pull over levee, then throw back in dry box. It kept winch from getting splashed all the time. Worked fine for me.

Are those SouthernLite Leds? If so, they will rust after your first trip. Still a good light, but I have no experience with their winches.

I've thought of doing something like this many times. How heavy is the Harbor Freight winch that you used?

I've known several people with similar setups and it works well. I have a 1=7/8" ball mounted on the front of mine and a winch designed to be used on a boat trailer with a bracket attached that slips over the ball...its big enough to slip over the ball and when the cable has tension on it it slides into a groove. Works like a charm to haul a 1872 riveted boat over levees and beaver dams and it also works when the truck is stuck in the mud. We have several foot tide difference off the east coast and I have used it to get back to deep water also...

I think it was a 2500lb winch , like the size u see on 4 wheeler .. been a few years ago.... boat was 1642 tunnel hull with mercury 40... I loved that boat. My teenager sunk it in intercoastal, never to be seen again.

Can you post a pic of that setup? I have a hard time visualizing stuff like that.

google winch on john boat and look at the pics.
a 3500 harbor freight winch bolted to the front of your boat is less than $100. always get more winch than u need.

a 20'' led light bar off amazon is about $30 and will be way more light than u need and probly get your arse whipped for blinding people. lol

good luck!!!

Don't have it anymore to take a pic. Had a 5" piece of 2" square tube welded to center of main beam of bow, relocated running light to top of square tube, this was the "receiver".... then had a 6"x6" piece of 3/16 plate welded to 11" piece of smaller square tube, with winch mounted to plate... this was the "stinger", like putting a hitch in and out of the draw-tite hitch on your truck, except the receiver was on top of bow, instead of underneath rear bumper.... all aluminum. Best description i can give u. Used a standard hitch pin to hold it in place.
