which and why?

synthetic makes winch quite a bit lighter on front bumper,, I likey. no pricked fingers, either.

Go synthetic. No memory and doesn't get shards of cable in your hand.

If synthetic put a cover on it, uv degradation will kill it and if your buying vectran or spectra line it's freaking expensive.

Mine got me once before I put a set of work gloves inside my driver's side door panel. Lesson learned.

I'd go synthetic, but wash the mud off of it after you use it, and like the other poster said, use a cover. Steel cable is basically no maintenance
Also, one will kill you and the other one will just pop you like a towel
Everyone I know with synthetic uses Amsteel

I liked my Amsteel syn cable. It popped once due to my improper use. Just tied a good knot in it and kept using, try that with steel cable.... UV rays do take their toll in it though....

consensus is synthetic.
the price difference sucks though.

Saw a metal cable snap when I was younger, they scare the shite out of me

Google a YouTube video: dangers of Synethic lines.
I dunno if it's still up but it's freaking scary. The potential energy stored in some synthetic lines is crazy.
The equivalent steel cables would just snap or would be so big they are immovable. Also corrosion is a huge problem.

Only way you go steel is if you are using it on a winch that has already used steel and scratched the drum or you can't afford synthetic.
If you go synthetic, make sure you cover it.

If you dont already hsve a wench, go on ebay and buy a viper w syn cablecin the biggest size they have.
I think the last one i got was a 5500lb for 269$ w mounting brackets.
This is on a 900 Ranger Xp.
We're pretty rough on a wench and have not had problems.
Don't buy the gorilla brand theyre junk

Spectra rope is the answer here.
I have steel cable on mine and I hate it. It's heavy as frick, has pokies all over it, might kill me if it breaks, and it just all around sucks.
Did I mention it's heavy and pokey?

Synthetic here and have no complaints. It has several benefits like everyone stated before me.
