I had to add another section of stack to my chimney. Was too close to roofline. Fixed my issue.

Bingo. Got heat up the the stack first. Colder air being heavier can lead to smoke being pushed back down early on.

I run my gas manifold awhile prior to wood.

It the bird screen isn't clogged, then it sounds like it isn't high enough.

This gives the general rule of thumb.

Been in our house 17 years and never used ours once

Almost 14 years here and never even thought about building a fire. We have two though, one in the basement, and they somehow share the single chimney. The room that the fireplace is in upstairs used to be a small den. We’ve since converted it to a master bath. I think at one point my wife had an iron candle holder in there when it was the den. I just turn on the gas furnace if we’re cold. It would be a pain to haul logs to where either of them are located. And cleanup would be a huge pain as well. I guess even back in the 60s when it was built they didn’t think about it being used.

We had the same issue with our fireplace and had to ditch it for gas logs.

Birds or squirrels may have built a nest in the flue. Had this happen to me. Got a flue cap installed that's bird and squirrel proof or is your flue wide open at the top?

Nothing wor}ing. Guess it's stopped.

Saying that the window is "Cracked" open is a very general term. To help you solve or improve your problem, please measure just how much did you open this window? 1/2", 1" or 2"? How much the window is open can make a big difference. If the window is only open say 1/2", try opening it 1" or more to see if that helps to reduce the smoking.

Also, does your chimney meet the design 10 foot x 2 foot rule as talked about in the link posted above? If the chimney is too short, it will not pull a good draft which allows smoke to get into the house.

I've always had to warm up the chimney stack first and that's worked up until about 2 weeks ago.

I'm Guess in a bird's nest but imma let the snow on my roof dissipate before climbing lol

Probably 4-6".

On a side note, I checked with neighbors who had their house built by the same builder and most likely the same fireplace people. None of them have ever had problems...so they say.

If your intake for the central heat is anywhere near the room where the fireplace is and the heat is on it can suck smoke out of the fireplace.

The chinchy sheet metal fire places like is in my house scare the shite out of me. I'd burn the whole gd house down with 3-4 sticks of dry pecan. Cheap shite.

Might be the outside air lever. Looks like mine and the damper lever is located on top of the fireplace

That should be plenty of ventilation. I usually open a window about 1.5" to 2".

Gusty wind outside can cause some smoke to come out of the fireplace.

I don't know what that lever does. Do any of your neighbors have that? Try moving it while a fire is burning.

The house I had in Baton Rouge, had a "trap door" for cleaning out the ashes. On the outside of the fireplace there was door to remove the ashes. I also cracked this open to allow air to come into the fireplace. This worked great. Fire burned great and I did not have to open a window to keep smoke out of the house.
