They are definitely far too complicated for what they are. They tried too hard to make it not sound or smell like a 2 stroke. The optimax got it right. It was so much simpler and cheaper because its just a normal 2 stroke engine with some fuel, air and oil controls wrapped around it. An etech with the cowling off looks like a space ship. They arent easy to work on.
XD100 oil is about $75 a gallon these days as well with no known subsititute available on the market

Still running a 1992 Johnson Fast Strike 175. Remove the oil injection and premix and make sure the water pump is operational and those things are darn near bulletproof.

I don’t ever remember them being very reliable even before all the jap brands came along.
My grandparents had a Skeeter with a 115 Johnson in the 90s. It was always a pain in the arse to crank
Fond memories though as a kid riding in that boat and smelling the blue smoke.

Wow! I had no idea at all these were the reasons they went out of business. So they did it to themselves. All this time I was thinking it was maybe because the new market of Jap motors was undercutting them on price. I wouldn't know where to begin looking and choosing a new outboard today. I guess it's safe to say that since Mercury is still in business, they must be doing something right? I've got my Dad's old 1968 Evinrude 6 hp that he bought brand new. Hasn't been run in 40 years. It's in good shape, been stored safely. May try to get it running for old time's sake. Yeah, I remember that smell and sound vividly.
