I've never met anyone, and I've met a LOT of fisherman in my life, who would ask me "which one? spinning or baitcaster" if I asked them identify an open faced reel

There are three types of reels (besides fly obviously): open-faced(baitcaster), closed-faced(zebco/spincast), and spinning.

Again gonna have to agree with Salmon. Grew up in BR, family is from Avoyelles Parish and all of my friends and family would instantly know that if I said I got a new open-face reel that it was a baitcaster. There would be absolutely zero confusion and no one would refer to a spinning reel in that manner.

meh
its not like I'm going to change what I call the reels
if I told my brother, who is probably more of a "serious fisherman" than anyone on this board, that I bought a new baitcaster, he would give me the same look he gave me when he asked me to bring lettuce for burgers and I brought arugula

Damn Princess combo.
Tigerdeacon, Jr. tore up some catfish this weekend with an Ironman combo. When the catfish would get close, he would want to use the net to scoop it out and I would have to take over reeling duties. Glad there are no pics of me fighting catfish with a 2' pole.

so I just walked 2 offices down and asked my coworker, who was on his colleges bass fishing team and fishes tournaments every weekend what does he think of when I say "open faced reel" and he started listing baitcast reels
then I asked him would he ever think "spinning reel" when someone says "open faced"
his response "never"

Just called up my dad's buddy who has been a charter captain for 25+ years if he's ever heard of spinning reels referred to as open faced reels. He responded yes.
