That sound a brand new SAA makes when you pull the hammer back...

Unless your father is a collector I would probably not spend the money on a quality 1st Gen SAA but instead focus in on the later 2nd and 3rd Gen guns from the 1950's til today.
I know a little about Colt single actions. What is you approximate budget?
He is not a collector but he did have an 1st Gen SSA he had to sell to make ends meet while growing up. I don't know what I am going to buy or my budget until I see the pistol I am going to buy.
About the only think I know for sure is his had bone grips so I think I am going to try and get one of those.
Edit- I dont know 100% sure it was a 1st Gen, but it was black powder.

Everyone should experience a cocking a SAA that hasn't been fired.

Damn that hurts

You can get aftermarket ones if you can't find a gun with them

I'm no colt expert, but I don't think 2nd gen colts were made until the 40's, so his was almost certainly 1st gen.

If it was black powder only then it was an early 1st Gen gun, or possibly a later 1st Gen that he was shooting lower pressure black powder in to avoid stressing the gun.
1st Gen guns are highly desirable, and have a mystique that the later guns cannot match (the only guns that even come close are the early black box 2nd Gen guns from the 1950's IMO). Consequently, 1st Gen Single Action Armies command a premium, with prices escalating very quickly for well preserved original examples.
Bone grips could possibly be provided by an aftermarket supplier, although bone isn't really all that common for grips. Could they have been stag / antler?

You have a point, they were white and since I don't know a whole lot about this stuff they could have been made of stag or antler. In my mind they were stark white but that was many moons ago.

Please don't say they were ivory

You are correct. 2nd Gen production ran from 1956 - 1974.
When Colt stopped producing the SAA in 1941 they declared that the gun was gone forever. The popularity of western movies and Ruger's single actions in the 1950's changed their minds.

Like I said, I cannot say exactly what they were.

Sounds like they were ivory.

Ahh I remember reading that once. Appreciate the info
Not exactly my cup of tea, but

Wish I could find stag grips for my 19.

Having to sell a first gen black powder SAA with ivory grips would be so horribly painful.
Best of luck finding another one though. I'm sure your old man would be thrilled to have one.
