Yeah, but a 17 HMR doesn’t leave much head for my skinner device to grasp onto....

What gun I use when squirrel hunting depends or the type of hunting. If still hunting, I usually use a 40 year old Ruger 10/22 that's been upgraded w/ a Hogue overmolded stock, Federson target barrel, Silincerco Spectre suppressor, Burris 4.5-14X scope and CCI medium velocity RN bullets.
When we go squirrel hunting w/ a dog, I use the same Ruger 10/22 (back up gun to the "sniper"), a Savage bolt action 17 Mach 2 w/ Mueller 4-14.5X scope ("sniper") or Remington M1100 16 gauge w/ full choke and #7 1/2 shot ("clean up" man).

With the dog, I shamelessly 16 gauge them

Pretty picture. I have nearly the identical setup.
When I take my time, it’s dead within 40yds.

When we go squirrel hunting w/ a dog, we normally have a number of guns/hunters along, always at least 1 shotgun, but frequently 2; always at least 1 semi-auto 22 LR +/- a 17 M2. If the squirrel hangs tight to the tree, the 17 M2 or 22 LR gets first shot; once the squirrel starts moving, the shotgun(s) start shooting!

I don’t squirrel hunt anymore because I don’t eat the.m but if I did I have a 10/22 with Hogue Overmold stock and a Tactical Solutions barrel, Surefire Ryder suppressor and a 4-12x40 scope.
You can hit a squirrel in the eyeball within 50yds.
