I'm interested in hearing about Min/Max magnification, Objective size, Reticle, etc. Picking out my next scope is tough. Almost all Louisiana btw.

For me and the way I hunt, leupold vx3i 2.5-8x36. Lightweight, good glass, really durable, fairly affordable.

Hunting what and where?

Deer in LA/MS? Good eye relief, clairity , large field of view , multi coated lens that are suited for low light encounters

Are you trophy hunting in a place that you need to judge /score your buck on the hoof at 250 yards? If so get something in the 20x plus range so you can study him, are you hunting some where that they will be moving quickly and target acquisition is priority? 3x9, 4x16 with a 50mm obj, are you going to be hiking long distances with it? Get something simple and light

All depends on the situation

Do you need to count points at 300 yards ?

Budget?

No. $1000 or less preferably. Currently have a Redfield Revolution 3-9x50 that I'd like to move over to my .444.

2x7 or a 3x9 with no more than a 40 mm objective. Keep the weight to 15 ounces or less. Plain duplex reticle is good and there is nothing wrong with a BDC reticle if you want.

I am sure there will be many opinions, and all will have merit, but I would go with a 4-16x50 from a high end mfr, I have. Swarovski z3 but don’t think they make them anymore, go for quality glass not bells and whistles

I won't recommend a brand, but as for reticle I don't want anything other than a heavy duplex. I don't want extra lines or dots. Keep it simple.
For 99 percent of hunting, max power of 8, 9, or 10 is plenty.

how do you determine if a scope has quality glass or not?

I may be wrong, but in my mind I feel the larger tube gathers more light wich is important to me

Brand name, reviews, putting them to my eye and testing ( not on the floor at cabelas ) go to a shop that will let you walk outside with it, esp late in the evening, ask to look through friends , after you look through enough of them from varied quality levels you will know

a question for the 3x9 people. why not get a 4x16 instead? if 16x zoom is too much, why not just keep the scope on 9, and you will still have a lot more zoom in case you need it.

I think the Low Mag is the bigger issue along with FOV.

I agree especially at the $1K price point, unless weight is that big of a factor, I don’t use 16x often , but like having it

But 3 and 4x are so close it don’t matter, and 9-16 there is a huge difference, 4-16 for me
