What to do with an old sliding miter saw?

I just purchased a new one because my old one wouldn't lock down anymore so the cuts were not precise. I need to be precise for my woodworking. But the motor on my old one works fine. I was thinking about using it to cut metal (which I could permanently lock it to cut 90°) but read several places that it wasn't a good idea. That wood miter saws are not designed to cut metal because they're too fast, etc. I hate to just scrap it but am struggling on what to do with it. Any ideas?

Someone will buy it on Craigslist. You can recoup a few dollars that way.

Or pull the good motor and other parts off and put em in a box and label em spare parts. Had a push mower deck rust out on me saved every thing else. The blade, front tires and throttle cable came in handy already and I still have a spare motor.

I've been cutting metal on my wood miter saw for about 8 years. It doesn't seem to mind.

Good to hear, what kind of blade are you using?

Yep. I have a metal blade for mine I've used to cut pipe before. Blades are fairly cheap and you can swap one out in about 2 minutes. Just go slowly, definitely wear eye protection, and you'll be fine.

Pics?

I just built a rolling workbench for myself and added a removable cutout for my miter saw. Interested to see what you're talking about.

I made some changes. It now sits on some permanent legs and I used aluminum angle iron for the fence. I highly recommend a long fence, clamping on a stop block anywhere I want helps make repeatable cuts for things like table legs..

Same here. Just get the right stone blade.

An abrasive metal cutting blade should be okay to use. I don't think a carbide metal blade would work though. Those blade use quite a bit slower saws. Also the blades are expensive.
