And whoever said prep work first, that's a great call. In fact, I enjoy working on the tractor much more than the hunt, but I have always been that way. Whatever peace I find in the stand I find tenfold from the seat of a tractor. It really gives me a chance to slow down and for my brain to sort out all the bullshite that goes on in my day to day. It is the ultimate stress reliever for me, so much so that I believe I will go get on it right now.

I don't deer hunt much at all, but if I went out every time with your mindset I would have to buy two more deep freezers.

It's hard for me to narrow it down. I love the prep work, checking the cameras all year and watching the deer grow, and all. But I think the part I love most is spending time around the fire planning the next days hunt with my 9 year old son, brother, and best friend.
We have a very primitive but comfortable camp and I live the whole experience every weekend from the time we set everything up until we pee the fire out and head home on Sunday. And killing a few deer in between aunt bad either.

Getting outta town and relaxing with friends and family. Shooting a lot of big arse deer is also a plus.

Well not just turtles, turtles and fish.
I don't buy meat at the store. There are 5 mouths in my house to feed. I don't get to hunt nearly as much as I once did, so yes, every time I go deer hunting I try to kill a deer. If I have a limit of does I'm out there trying to kill a buck. I don't walk through the woods shooting the first deer I see. I go with the intention of killing a deer (not just any deer) every time. I try to have around 200 lbs of deer meat in my freezer at the end of every season. I usually run out in September. Between that, fish, turtles, turkeys, and assorted other game, it gets us through the year.
I hunt places where there are standards to which bucks must meet, and I don't break the rules. If I'm hunting a place where a deer has to be 140", goddammit I'm doing what I have to do to put myself in the best position to kill a 140" deer that day. It's not about slaughtering deer, it's about not wasting time and money. My old lady stays at home with 3 kids while I'm hunting or fishing. She gets kinda pissed when I come home with nothing.

Anyone can go kill meat, it takes skill and determination to trick a truly mature, keen, trophy whitetail buck into making a mistake and stepping into the kill zone
I kill plenty of mature deer.

During the peak of the rut all it really takes is a little luck.

here is just someting about getting out of the house, no work, no stress, just me..God..and nature that sets my mind at ease.
+1
Fishing is the same for me. Sometimes I just need to get out on the water and burn through some fuel. I love the solidarity.

Hanging out at the camp with family and friends and that rare cool morning in bow season.
