Geauxcats one last thing I would be willing to bet 95% of all dog owners started off with what your intentions are a dog to pick up ducks that will be well manered in the duck blind. Then you start to see what dogs can do and you want more....

If I were you I would start reading everything and take the puppy out there but just let him play around.

Training dogs can start with the day you pick them up it is the pressure part that has to wait until older.
One of my favorite training first sessions for a young puppy is to get a small lightweight paint roller. If you have a hallway in your house close all the doors with the exception of one which is where you are sitting. Tease him with the paint roller then throw it toward the other end of the hallway giving him a command such as "fetch" and let him go after it and encourage him to bring it back to you by clapping and saying "here". The only way out is toward you so you are teaching fetching, marking and bringing it back to you in one playful session.
