Well, well. I sure am glad I read this thread.
Coot, to be honest I couldn't do it to one of my dogs, but IMO you did the right thing. He was obviously suffering. We lost a lab this year right after a duck hunt, bunch of grown arse men tearing up in the woods. It was a long ride back to the camp with him on the back of the wheeler.
And in regard to the rest of the thread.

I tried to do it to one of mine and ended up pussing out and taking him to the vet to put him down.
