The brain really should be taken to your local animal contol or veterinarian to be sent off for testing ASAP, if it is semi-intact, which it probably isn't. They can get the brain if you take them the dog. You should call your MD for advice.

Rabies is very, very unlikely but maybe not worth taking a chance. Once a person has symptoms thew are screwed (and not in a good way).

This is true. I used to take out the brains for rabies testing at the LSU Vet School and if the brain stem is messed up then the test results will typically be inconclusive. They will then suggest the series of rabies shots.

Should have taken to the vet before it got so bad he bit you out of pain.

Op is looking at 14 days of shots that hurt. Better to take a .22 to the head.
