Because it's total chickenshit, akin to hunting deer at night with a spotlight, "fishing" using electricity, and shooting ducks on the roost at dark.

I understand that.

So it's more satisfying to call them in closer to take a shot with a shotgun than it would be to place a good shot with a rifle from a greater distance?

I only saw turkeys once and it was on a squirrel hunt. My pops wasn't a turkey hunter and most of our club were deer guys.

I would think that putting a round on a smaller target from distance would be more challenging but, again, I'm not a turkey hunter.

Not a challenge

But also, turkeys have very good eye sight and are not colorblind. Guys dress head to toe in camo, orange not an option. Shooting high powered rifles at birds on the ground with a guy potentially sitting up against a tree is a terrible idea.

Didn't know that. Our camp was all private land and we all knew where each other would be the morning of a deer hunt, so that contributes to my ignorance on the matter. We all wore orange anyway, but no one was ever within range of anyone else.

Appreciate the info.

You might know where someone is going to start turkey hunting, but once the woods wake up and the gobbling starts you never know where someone else is going to have moved

Completely agree, that's why I mentioned the difference in my deer hunting experience as opposed to turkeys.

Plus if you aren't on private land it's all a moot point anyway. You'd never know where anyone was.

Killed 3 yesterday in TX. All were studs. Birds still in big flocks and tons of jakes made the hunting a lot more difficult than normal.

I’m here to admit that Texas has probably tainted my view of turkey hunting. This weekend was my first time, took 2, nearly doubled on the second shot, one rolled and ran off, and I whiffed on the last one when I got cute and tried a head shot at about 15-20 FEET and shot right over him. Didn’t really think until afterwards how tight that pattern out of that Carlson tube must have been at the range. Doh

If I get a chance to go again, I’m going to think seriously about a more open choke, the birds were all right on top of me. Not responding to calls, and the hens and jakes were still in groups counted in dozens. The deer hunters in this lease consider the turkeys a nuisance, and my buddy and a guy that just dropped out are the only ones that hunt (4000 acres). Couldn’t get over how big the birds are either. Definitely paid forward the time I’ll spend when I try my hand in MS. The one with the double beard is from what I understand, a bit unusual.

That’s why I refuse to even try TX turkey hunting. Just not interested.

Hey, there are a lot of birds, but try to shoot one with 30 hens looking at you. The couple of days of hard work prepping the perfect spots to hunt had a lot to do with our success.

I enjoyed the Hell out of it, would go again.
