Trout love to hang out in the calm water right behind a rock. Going upstream, look for upside down Vs in the water and cast right above that to let it flow down both sides of the V around the rock. Also, you will catch a lot more fish by dropping a nymph behind the dry fly than on the fly itself. A local fly shop or internet message board can tell you what kind of nymph is hatching. If not, grab a rock on the edge of the river, turn it upside down, and see what nymphs are stuck to the rock.

OP

And they could be in fast moving water behind a rock. I've caught them in water that I thought....no way, and what do you know.

Underneath an overhanging bank. Under over hanging trees.

Think like a fish. They need cover from predators but hang near a spot where food comes to them.

It's why I always hated lake fishing for trout without a boat when i was a kid. They had to find you versus you knowing how to read the river and finding them.

Find a book about reading the river. Your local library might have some books on it.

I've also learned long ago to not overlook anything. Fish are crafty and could be in the littlest spot and you go by it without working it and then you see someone else hook up there.

Watch the shadows as well. They could be behind a rock that is in the shadows but very well might move once the sun hits their spot.

It’s a little early for dry flies. Find a local shop and ask them what would be the best this time of year there.

I would imagine a nymph of some sort (pheasant tail was mentioned earlier) copper john, hair ear, etc are all stuff that you may want to try but again, local shop will be able to steer you better

makes sense, we only have one lake in SC with trout and that’s Jocassee. It’s over 500 feet deep and has very clear water.

Yep. Have to troll for lake trout.

Trout in a river just waits for food to come to them.

This guy does a very good job teaching about fly fishing, winter go bigger flys understand entomology and hatches grab a cooler of beer and just sit and watch what happens when the full sun hits a river vs early morning. It’s fun but can be frustrating. Many can make it complicated with all the parts, just have fun no mater what equipment you buy it’s all about fly presentation, and you can do that with a 50 dollar rod or a 2000 hand made split cane rod, they both catch fish. it’s all in the fisherman not the equipment.
