This law does not coincide with their Concealed carry permit laws. Whether it is true or not, Gumps have come in here saying it is as easy as buying a hunting license. Just go to sheriff's office, pay some money, fingerprints, and leave with a permit.

Coincide may not be the right word but you get the point.

So i will lock it in its case. Pack it with luggage , throw the bullets in the console and roll out. Im not trying to fend off a gang ambush, just a security blanket if I have a blowout or breakdown.

Just want to double check..

I can keep my loaded mags in my console as long as the gun is in my toolbox, right?

i don't wanna hear it... it's specifically illegal in Louisiana to shoot your water pistol at a bank teller after robbing them. ;)

As funny as this is, I agree.

Every other state in the south has pretty permissive laws with a handgun in a car. I don't see why Bama makes it a PITA when they make getting a concealed carry license so damn easy.

Hell, in Louisiana, you have to take a full day course for a CHL. But if you want to travel with one, as long as you're 17, the damn thing can be right on the dashboard with no problems.

And I know in Texas it must be concealed in some way. So as long as it's in the glove box you're good to go.

Bama is the redheaded step child of the southeastern United States.

EDIT: By the way, all laws pertaining to handguns (or most of them) can be found at opencarry.org.

This is the point I was trying to convey in my earlier post.

I just decided to say it again, with some different ingredients.

to the OP.

trust me, the cops around here don't enforce that. at least from my experiences, they've always been pretty damn cool. i'm not saying the law isn't the law, and do follow it or whatever... but i was speeding and got me a 20mph over, and a trooper that couldn't have been more dissimilar from me saw my license and asked if i had a firearm... to which i replied "yep, right in my mid-console. need to see it?" and he didn't care. basically, as long as you aren't sketchy or doing something blatantly illegal like crack while you're driving down the road, i think you'll be just fine.

I want to expand on this. We're planning on a LONG drive this summer, over 2 months in a camper van. The trip will take us along the Mexican border and to some pretty remote places so I want to bring our home defense pistol (38 special). This trip will cover every state west of the Mississippi except Nebraska and the Dakotas. The key is probably California and we will be there a good bit.

My inlaws have done this in a RV and said it is no problem legally since the RV is their home. I'm not sure that applies to a camper van and also not sure they know what they are talking about.

Does anybody have knowledge about this and/or a link to a web site that covers this topic well?

This has always been my thoughts on the matter as well as long as I was in the Deep South. But I don't want to risk a trip to the cross bar motel or a felony on my good ol boy assumptions either.

ETA: I have a concealed permit now an don't have to worry about it anymore.

Lived here for 30+ years. Never heard of that. Tuscalooser police noticed mine in the door once asked to see my permit. No problem.

There is a list of states that recognize Alabama concealed carry permits. Just about all the southern states do. As easy as it is to get one, there's no reason anybody in Alabama shouldn't have one.

That was so kind of you to correct my spelling. Are you the grammar police? Or just a geek?

I didn't correct anything.

I pointed out that you have a permit. The OP is referring to traveling through the state without a permit.

EDIT: He is also not an Alabama resident so he can't get a permit there. And I'm assuming he doesn't have the time/money/patience/age to get a permit here.
