What sucks is if you fail to identify your target and kill a bear or a protected bird, you will be fined heavily and lose hunting rights.

Fail to identify target and kill a person, hunting accident. No charges.

frickin stupid if u ask me. Put the shooter under the frickin jail.

i bet you will teach him not to speed and not to text while driving when he is 16. Not every lesson is obeyed, sometimes with tragic consequences.

I also have an 18 yr. old. I know this all to well (speeding and wearing a seatbelt, that is)

No charges =/= not paying for what you did.

Civil suits are quick to follow.

willing to bet the shooter had similar teaching. I mean, you have to go thru hunter's ed now to even get a license. they give that lesson over and over.

Did he have that?

Not necessary to get licensee.

My 12 yr old and I were sitting in the deer stand Sat. morning talking about being 100% certain of what you shoot prob. about the time this happened.

Talking about it is one thing. We take some kids youth hunting, they aren't even allowed to handle the gun until they verify through other means than a scope they have a good target, part of the problem to many hunters try to aquire their target through the scope with finger on trigger.

It is if born after Sept. 1, 1969. But, it's really no excuse for not having one. I'm exempt but I've sat through the class 3 times. Once in school, once when I had to take my younger brother and once with my son.

I missed the part where I said all we did was talk about it. Thanks for the parenting tip though

That also. But a 18 yo doesn't need it either to get license.

I may be wrong but it's my belief that if you're buying a license and under the age 45 you have to have Hunter's ED and I haven't been able to find proof otherwise.

You can get it now without, just must be hunting with someone with it to legally hunt. I would think that means the educated hunter is in direct contact.

Yep

quote:

eXcept a person may hunt without hunter education certification if they are accompanied by and under direct supervision of a person who was born before September 1, 1969 and has a valid hunting license or they are accompanied by and under the direct supervision of a person who is 18 years of age or older and has proof of completion of a hunter education course approved by the department.

I've never been asked for my hunters safety card when getting a license.

Maybe I look old.

I or my firm have defended several of these cases. I have talked to the shooters in detail in private and have been present during their depositions. I have consulted with psychological experts on the issue for trial prep. Let me tell you, these people are convinced they are shooting an animal. Even the guy who shot the man on a 3 wheeler. He just knew he was going to go find a dead hog on that fence line. No amount of training or pre-hunt talk is going to change this.
