PP gets tangled in your hooks, use a flouro leader.

It happens, but it's never been a problem for me. Braid also floats the best which is why I love it when throwing top waters

Yes you are correct, I thought about the floating thing after I posted, was going to edit and then a fleet of Entergy trucks show up running red tape neighbor has gas shooting up in front yard. Other neighbor is on patio chain smoking camels. I use mono leader, get a little stretch and not as visible. I throw frogs at reds a good bit and on those I go straight braid 65#.

Man, great responses in this thread.

I can see that number one, I'm going to use braid, and number two, I'm going to have to find out what # test works best for me.

Because I have no concerns about losing anything bigger than a trophy trout, I'm going to start with your suggestion, which I think was also mentioned by another poster.

Those numbers just look right to me. At least for the way I intend to use it.

Braided line test depends on pole length and action. Wind knots are a reall bitch and usually are the cause of a heavy/light test that doesn't fit the pole length or action.

medium heavy action rods:6'4"-7'
Braided Test: 15 lbs

15lbs is plenty. Braided strength is far superior than Mono and does not fray.

I have custom made 7' LSU rods.

Medium light action. I'll never go back to a store bought rod again. I still have several on old reels, but I won't purchase any more.

Does that mean I should go heavier on the braid?

I find I have more bird nests with the lighter braids, I tend to keep my stuff above 30lbs, which is very thin, I think 8 lb equivalent. If you tie direct, use a sharpie on the first few feet. I cut a grove in the tip and run the line thru it. Stuff starts to fade after a few trips.

I use the 30# on my Chronarch and Calcutta, and I have yet to break off on a fish pulling through thick grass and through/over oyster beds. One is on a Falcon Coastal 7' M, and the other is on a St. Croix Mojo Inshore 7' MH.

Shite Bourg from the pics I've seen of your fish, you can get by with 2lb test and still horse the fish.

i find i birds nest more with braid, but its easier to get out. it's never a catastrophe. can usually pull it out in a few seconds.

i could probably set my brakes a little bit better though.

That's the kinda thing I need to know.

I'll probably use a flourocarbon leader.

I'm not really sure what you're referring to here. Are you explaining how you splice the leader, and why do you need to sharpie anything?

I use a 7 foot Medium Heavy St. Croix w/ a brand new Shimano Sahara 3000 FE. 15lbs braided 20lbs mono leader. I horse in every fish I catch.

I have caught 25-30lb fish on that set up with no problems. Of course some of my acquired angling skills were needed.

I never do this ever, and I never pop out any guides. Do you constantly have ppl using your poles that are incompetent? Cutting the tip? I'm so confused because I would hope you don't ruin your pole(s) buy cutting a notch in the guide.

Edited leader for guide.
