(WAFF) - The Alabama Wildlife and Fisheries Division reports that deer near county lines in the Shoals have tested positive for chronic wasting disease. Officials confirm 10 deer in Hardeman and Fayette counties in Tennessee have CWD. The easternmost cases fall within 50 miles of the Lauderdale County and Colbert County. In response, Alabama wildlife officials will increase sampling surveillance efforts within Lauderdale and Colbert counties through standard methods of sampling hunter-harvested deer, roadkill deer and reports of any sick deer.

These deer have to had been imported from out of state. Something isn’t right.

Spoke with a Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries biologist recently. His personal opinion was of the stance that this will ruin deer hunting in Mississippi for years. He said once you start seeing 1.5 year deer with it, they’re all fricked due to the 18 month incubation period. Once fawns are dropped with the disease, it’s completely uncontrollable

Only thing I heard that could possibility control it is by incinerating the ground where it was found.

I haven't heard that solution but I assume its the same as saying its impossible to control.

As far as I've read, the best hope is that a vaccine will be found. And there's nothing of the sort so far.

This didn’t ruin deer and elk hunting in Colorado and Wyoming. It’ll only ruin it if wildlife departments overreact or it gets passed on to humans.

Is there not a way to test/sample soils to see if the CWD causing prion is present? It would make it easy to see if it is present before animals show symptoms. Just send in a soil sample every year from areas of high deer concentration (like feeders), and it comes back negative or positive for CWD prions.

Deer season has been extended to the end of January in the red counties. TWRA is hoping to get 300 additional deer to sample per county.

Ms deer biologist said it takes 1400 degrees for an hour or more to destory it.
He also said he read a report of a high fence property that had it. They killed all the deer and quarantined the property for 7 years. When they reintroduced deer, they just about instantly had CWD.
2 of the 4 deer found to be CWD positive in Ms, were 1.5 years old.

It is hard to believe a biologist would incite this type of scare. This prion has been known for decades and there has never been a scenario where this disease has caused mass death in a herd of deer. Please stop panicking.

Ehhhh, it has caused big die offs in populations with high concentrations. Large groups of deer are in a weakened state and they get another fast acting disease that they die from. But the root cause was the CWD.

This is fairly new though because of how long it takes for infection rates to get that dense in a given population.

Not to be a dick but this has been discussed at nauseam on here and the admins refuse to allow a sticky. But there are multiple threads that can be searched with this info. I hunt in two states with high CWD and have had a family member die of CJD which lead me to do a lot of research. I have talked to several fed and state biologists from three areas and all have worrisome theories. Very little is still known about it.

There needs to be a sticky thread on this.
