I know technically you are supposed to have any road worthy vehicle titled in Louisiana, but for just using locally is this an issue I should concern myself with. I have seen many for sale that the seller has no title.

I would be concerned about not having insurance on it and it not being registered and so that would be a personal liability on you. I wouldn’t drive it on the road unless it was just a couple miles of un-policed back roads but really there’s no excuse because for a couple hundred extra dollars you can get one with a title.

If the trailer was properly transferred either the seller should have the title or should be able to get a title reasonably easily.

In my experience, the most common reason for not having a title is because someone ended up with their deceased relative's property and no one did a succession or checked on how to do the transfer without opening a sucession (which is pretty simple).

Another situation is purchasing a trailer from someone in a state like Texas that does/did not issue title on trailers and then couldn't get one from La. OMV because they didn't get a proper title when they purchased it (although they may have gotten something that looks just like a title certificate). That can be a PITA to fix and can also be expensive if the original seller isn't cooperating.

Another possibility is that the trailer is stolen or just doesn't belong to the person selling it to you. That is something I would be very concerned about.

Ask the person selling the trailer why they don't have title and see what they say.

As to worrying about pulling it around without title, I'd beconcerned about getting a citation every time I pulled it. It's probably worth getting title just for the peace of mind and not worring about a ticket.

The few that I have seen are homemade trailers. They look pretty solid. I will pr only be using it to haul kayaks or my lawnmower and maybe gardening soil. I'm not going far.

If it is homemade, take it to the closest State Police Troop Headquarters and get it inspected. Then get a title issued.

Well you might want to check into it. If an illegal Mexican wrecks into it, or if you wreck it yourself, or if it catches on fire or is stolen, your own auto policy isn’t going to cover it.

The only way this will happen is if you have receipts for all major parts of the trailer.

No need to worry about it in Louisiana. Your liability extends from whatever vehicle is pulling it. If you want physical damage on it, you can add a policy, but not needed for liability.
