So Mrs. Cootkilla has been on my arse to get another inside dog. Her birthday is coming up so I will surprise with a new puppy. I have never used a crate to train an inside dog, always locked them in the utility room. My daughter has a stupid fricking cat, so that isn't an option anymore.

Here are a few questions that I have.
1. The dog is a schnauzer, how big of a kennel should I get? I work from 5 to 4 and the wife from 730-430, so the dog will be in there from 730 to around 4-430.
2. Should I just kill the cat?
3. Do I leave the dog water to drink during the day in the crate?
4. Should I just kill the cat?
5. Do you crate the dog at night when everyone is asleep? She isn't house trained yet so I don't want to be waking up in the middle of the night and stepping in dog piss, it's bad enough when I get drunk that I try to piss in the closet in my sleep.
We plan on leaving her roam when we are home and kenneling her when we leave.

Get one just big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around in. They like it cozy.

2. Should I just kill the cat?

No. But maybe the cat is interested in exploring outside and would run away if you accidentally left the door open...

3. Do I leave the dog water to drink during the day in the crate?

Negative.

4. Should I just kill the cat?

Again, I'd avoid this, but if something happened to the cat outside of your control, it would be a terrible loss.

We crate ours at night and they do fine. They stay outside when we are at work unless it is bad weather, and then they stay crated during the day. They roam freely while we are home and the. Crate at night while we sleep.

Full size or mini schnauzer? The crate doesn't need to be big enough for them to pee in the front and sleep in the back, supposedly. But obviously big enough for them to move around.

Assuming mini schnauzer, I would probably get something 24x36ish. Perhaps a little larger.

Kill the cat

Yes the dog needs water to drink if you're going to be gone a whole workday.

Even if you Kill the cat, crate training can be great.

Let her sleep in her kennel at night. If that's her home/bed, the thought is she won't want to pee where she sleeps

Schauzers are smart. It'll be a quick process

Eta- 8-9 hours is a long time without water IMHO

If you put water in the kennel with the pup guaranteed there will be piss everywhere. As a pup if you crate him/her for 8 hours as a puppy there will be piss and shite everywhere. I’ve crate trained 2 in the past couple years. Gotta take em out every 2/3 hours in the beginning or just get used to bathing the dog every day.

You can teach the dog 3 easy commands in the first couple weeks. Mine learned “outside” (not really useful), potty (useful), kennel (useful), she also learned all the important commands but these 3 were taught just by using the bathroom. I woke up every 2/3 hours and let her out the kennel. The first week or so I picked her up and took her straight out. I installed a bell on a rope and would hit it on the way outside. Set her down and said “go potty”. She did I celebrated like it was the greatest thing ever and gave her a small amount of kibble not treats. I did the bell so that when we were home she’d go hit it when she needed to potty. Well she figured it out quick and she abused it. She’s a lab and likes to be outside so she’d hit the bell whenever she got bored.

Edit: if you want to teach sit and any other useful commands quick... Take one of her meals, and use it as reward during a 10/15 minute training session. My dog is no genius but we had sit, place, kennel and maybe heel down within 3/4 weeks. Sit was basically done in a few days. The others took more work.

I plan on getting up in the middle of the night and taking her outside to potty every few hours.

Did you put a bed in the crate for her to sleep in? I am hesitant to do it until after she is potty trained. Maybe I will just put an old beach towel so I can toss it after it gets full of piss and shite.

Assuming mini schnauzer

Yes it is a mini. This will be my third one. I had one when I was in 2nd grade, but had nothing to do with training him.

My second one was pretty easy, put newspaper down in the utility room and would take him out as often as possible. He would use the newspaper at first but after about 4 weeks he would only go outside. This will be my first female and first to crate.

Get one big enough for the dog when it is full sized to turn around in. If crate trained right, the kennel will be their "safe space" and they will sleep in it every day/night. If the crate is in your bedroom, they like it even more at night. Eventually, you may be able to leave the door open at night, and they will just sleep in the room with you. The dog will pee in it as a puppy home all day until about 4 months old, when their bladder is strong enough to hold for 8 hours.

Absolutely not.

See answer 1 above, and get the open wire crate, unless you are traveling with the dog.

Good luck!

We’ve had our miniature schnauzer for 13yrs. Got him right before Katrina. His crate is 24” tall, 22” wide, 36” deep. We did use a smaller one initially and got this one after the in-laws schnauzer passed away.

We keep a little bed and blanket in there. No food or water. When we initially trained him, he would have to go out in the middle of the night. We trained him with his food to go into the crate on his own. All I have to say is “treat” and he goes straight to his crate and will stay there until you bring him a treat.

I can count on 1 hand how many times he messed in his crate, usually because he was sick.

We haven’t crated him at night for years. He’ll sleep on a pillow beside the bed. He’ll go scratch on the backdoor if he needs to go out. He’s much easier now that he’s older but his vision and hearing are terrible now.

We mainly crate him during the day 7:30-5. Sometimes I’m home for lunch and he’s out for about an hour.

I have a small 20"x11"x14" plastic one I will use for now and then get a little bigger one in a few weeks.

+1 on the wire crate. Temptation will be strong to let your dog out when it’s crying, but you really need to let it cry it out. It pays dividends in the end.

I’ll echo some of the other posts. No bedding in the crate for a pup. Maybe a light blanket that can be washed a lot. Good chance the pup messes in the kennel a couple if not a bunch in the beginning. Just gotta work through it. That and the whining at night. Just tough it out for a week or so, and the pup will be fine.

Can’t speak to specific kennel size but get one big enough for when she’s an adult. Darken it up with blankets on the outside and if possible or better yet you should get a divider for when she’s small. Doesn’t give her room to mess in the corner but also encloses the space which they like.

Some really good advice in this thread. We just got a beagle about a year ago and I had never had to crate train a dog before. It was much easier than I thought. My son did a bunch of reading on the internet which helped.

She pooped in her wire crate a few times but got past that pretty quickly. Dogs don't want to poop in "their" space, so once she figured out that the kennel was her area she cut that out.

She only whined in it for the first couple nights. We just put it in a room where we couldn't hear her. Once she realized that the kennel was her place to sleep every night, she would actually go get in it by herself around 9 or 10 o'clock.

She turns 1 year old next week and in the last few months we've let her start sleeping on the couch. We thought she would try to sleep in our bed with us, but she prefers to be on the couch in the living room alone.

Good luck

At about 1 year old we stopped kenneling our dogs up. Just got a dog bed by the bed and that’s where they like to be. We still kennel her up when we aren’t home. I’d try to find someone to check on her at least once when y’all are both gone for 8+ hours. If not you do what you gotta do.

Thanks for all the replies. I will update the thread as I go. I am going to try the small plastic kennel I have to begin and upgrade to a larger wire crate in a few weeks. The dog I am getting is the runt of the litter. I may try and swing home during the day for lunch the first couple of weeks to let her out to piss and shite if I have time.

Question about a beagle inside

Does she bark like beagles always do? I want one in an apt, but I don't want complaints from neighbors

At a minimum, keep a collar on the dog 100% of the time.

You don’t want risk it getting out and being shot by someone that shoots uncollared dogs.

All of my dogs have collars. I am the only one who shoots my dogs.
