My son wants to start using a bait casting reel. Any tips on how to make him successful with the least amount of frustration.

Right now he practices by casting into the pool. We put floating rings in the water and he casts at them. We tie on weights, not lures. Some of his friends have started coming over and they turn it into a game.

Practice

Thats about all you can do. And cheap line cause you will be cutting it a lot.

You're pretty much doing the right thing already.

Turn the break all the way up until he starts getting real good at avoiding backlash.

What kind of reel is he practicing with? With some you can adjust the counter-balance weights to make it a little more user friendly.

And in a couple of months he'll be Annie Oakley.

Teach him to fix his own backlash, Dad wouldnt let me cut it. Now I can always get them out, only cut to save time.

my son is 10 and has started using a bait caster over the last few months...he still has his trusty Zebco rigged up and one bait caster when we go fishing.

He has gotten pretty good at it but he has practiced a good bit. I help him out as well, but its something that will just require some time.

Here is a pic of my sons first bass with a bait caster..

when i wanted to start using one, my dad put a five gallon bucket, starting at short distances in the yard and until I could consistently ring it he wouldn't let me take it out on the boat. it was frustrating as hell, but at least now i can hit a gnat upside the head from about 30 yds in.

My dad had me and my brother(I was 5, he was 4) in the yard with nuts tied on them, casting for a five gallon bucket. I honestly can't remember when I couldn't throw an open face.

It just takes practice, we would spend hours in the yard, and it was a competition.

That was all my dad let me use too. Told me spinning reels were for pussies.

pull out about 50 feet of line and put some tape on the spool. that will keep the backlashes from getting to big. then practice, practice, practice.
