Timber hunting help

So me and a couple of buddies are planning a Arkansas timber trip this season, always wanted to hunt flooded timber. Never hunted timber, always the marsh and rice fields, what tactics are better suited for the timber? Also if anyone has made a similar trip what are some good areas? We were looking at White River WMA or Bayou Meto WMA.

Good calling and decoy movement. Make ripples with your feet if you have to.

the closer to the MS River, the better. The White River east of LR is pretty good.

We used to slip into some spots we knew were good usually, then when we'd find out they weren't we'd wade to wherever they were concentrating. No Dekes Just go where they want to land. They'll come back.

We usually don't worry with decoys.
Call once to a duck's tail and then STFU.
Keep your head on a swivel because they can come in from any directly.
Kick your feet to create a little motion.
Be ready for them to try to land on top of your head.

Yea I've always heard its better hunting the clear days and to use a jerk string. We are looking at hunting either the White River NWR or the Felsenthal NWR, anyone hunted these? We will have a boat but want to hunt standing. As far as calling probably should cut back on volume and notes, stick to greeting and feed calls?

WONDERFUL HUNTING!
I do it once a year, but with some guys from there that come down here to hunt.

Which one? I talked to a guy from up there that said last year was the best year they have had in about 10 years at Felsenthal due to them having water when most didnt.

Arkansas timber. Their place is 1/2 flooded timber 1/2 rice fields. They feed in the fields & rest in the timbers. Dont shoot untill feet hit the water, they have to go back up to get away.
The town is Ona, AR

A couple of us went to bayou meta last year and were about two weeks late. The water had dropped about two feet and was no longer in the timber. We didn't shoot much but saw a bunch of big groups. When y'all go make sure the water is up and it should be pretty awesome.

just wade in to where you want to be and find an opening in the timber (gas well, etc.) throw out a decoy or to and wait....keep your eyes open and jiggle a foot to make ripples...use a soft call and don't overdo it....
be warned, folks who hunt public flooded timber are very territorial...you'll have to get there early as hell to beat them and then expect them to be pissed that you are hunting "their hole".....your best bet is to hunt weekdays that are not adjacent to a holiday weekend...
unless you are walking a whole lot, be sure to fleece up on the bottoms, as standing in that water gets cold as hell....
I always had very good luck at russel sage wma near monroe, as long as the water was right...

Timing is everything with this hunt you are planning. You could spend quite a bit and come up empty. Call Slick Mccullums just out of Stuttgart. Good as it gets. Never had a bad hunt and if there are no birds they will be honest with you if you call them beforehand. You can thank me later. Hahaha
