Thoughts on where I could start to look for decent used 10-15 hp outboard in NOLA/BR area?

Got pow pow’s 14’ jon boat. Working on trailer but the 1966 Evinrude 9.5 Sportwin looks to be junk. Last I ran the engine was 1996 and it hummed fine back then. Would like a 10-15 HP but I’d rather not put a $2500 engine on this old boat. Thoughts on where I could start to look for a decent used 10-15 hp outboard in NOLA/BR area? If that proves unsuccessful what is a good new 9.9-15 HP?

Yeah, I'm not telling you what to do, but any bargain motor is gonna leave you in the same position you're already in. It won't be free but unless the block has a hole in it there isn't a lot to those old motors and fixing them up is a fun project. Likely would come out about the same money wise even figuring your time. In my experience what you're looking for doesn't really exist because if it's in good condition then someone just sunk money into it to rebuild or restore.

I have a 15 hp Mercury with 4 hours on it that I may part ways with. It was on a John boat in Colorado for a long time sitting in a shed. My dad brought it home and brought it to a mechanic to let him go through it. It’s in perfect shape. If you are interested, let me know, I’ll talk to my dad and see if he is cool with selling it. I had intentions of doing the same thing as you, but we have a bay boat and I saltwater fish 95% of the time. I have a gas tank for it as well. I’m in New Orleans, btw.

I doubt it's junk. I rebuilt a 1969 9.5 Johnson and the sucker is a tank. Easy motor to work on and there are a ton of videos on youtube about fixing them. If you have compression and the lower unit isn't wrecked it would probably be worth working on. The one I had hadn't run in 20 years and it took me a 10 minutes to get it started.

Best part about them is that they weight around 50 lbs. I could easily launch my boat off of the bank if I needed to when I was using that motor.

I have the same little motor, only it's a 1972 model (I believe). I used to carry a 14' boat in the bed of my truck and the motor in the boat. Would put the boat in the water and then put the motor on it.

Like you guys said, these little motors are pretty much bullet proof.

Cant tell you how many times we ran it hot or without oil. Sprayed WD40 in the cylinders worked the pull rope and it started up. I'd still have it if one of the workers hadn't stole it. I loved that 9.5.

My cousin has a little late 70s or early 80s 15hp Johnson Seahorse (I think its called) that hadn't been ran in decades. He brought it to one of his buddies who likes messing with outboards, and he had it running in one afternoon. Moral of the story is that your motor probably isn't junk. You can possibly have it running like a top with a few hundred bucks, and a little bit of effort.

In 1983 my dad sank his 9.9 while running in the river where it sat in 15ft of water for over a week. Blew out the carb, removed the spark plugs and dumped the water out of the cylinders and it was fine.

Few years back when I took an interest in it I decided the water pump needed to be replaced since it hadn't been done in years. When I opened up the pump housing there was nothing left of the impeller but what looked like a rough looking rubber bushing. He had ran it God knows how long with no cooling water. Changed the impeller and it spit tiny chunks of black rubber for months. Never missed a beat.

Absolutely, they were bulletproof. My Dad said he would have bought 10 if he would have known how much motors would have cost now. He paid 250..new

Thanks for all the advice. I just dont know enough about them. The lower unit leaks oil when I mount on the boat but the engine was covered and its not that dirty except for a rats nest.

Admin thanks for changing title

Before you spend anything go borrow a compression guage from autozone and see what you got, if I remember right it should be around 60 psi

Look up T-Mike's Vintage Outboard Restoration on Facebook. This is right up his alley. Lives over near Henderson. Can get you going for a few hundred at most. Got my 1965 9.9 mercury running great for a couple hundred. He likes working on Johnsons and evinrudes better.

LSUengr recommended a solid fix. T mikes got her running great! Caught a few bream and catfish on her maiden voyage this past weekend on the Bogue Falaya. Runs like a top! Even redneck engineered a few rod holders just as pow pow probably wouldve done. I can recommend t mikes as a great resource for restoring old motors.

Damn, he has that motor looking great. I have the Johnson version and if I had known about him I would have saved some headache.

ETA: my old uncle always tells this story. He was fresh out of the military and he spent big bucks (for the time) on a Ouachita jon and Evinrude 9.5 sport twin. He was pulling the boat back with a 442 oldsmobile and had the motor in it in a crate. The motor somehow flew out at 65 mph and the crate cracked open on the road. The only damage was some scratches to the cowling. He said that thing was a tank.

I cranked mine the other day, I need to get a gheenoe to put it on.
