Old Town launched their new lineup this morning if you go to their FB page. Looks like they also renamed their other boats.

Yeah they renamed the topwater and predator lineups and their new boats under the "sportsman" branding. The got rid of a couple of boats: predator MX, predator Minn kota. They added 3 new powered boats (2 of which come standard with ipilot) and brought over the Ocean Kayak Malibu PDL and nows it's the Salty 120 PDL.

What's the difference in the Salty and and the Sportsman PDL?

different hulls.

The sportsman 106 and 120 PDL is the topwater 106 and 120 PDLs. The topwater hulls are catamaran style and designed to be very wide and very stable plus they have more built in fishing touches.

The Salty is the Malibu PDL. It's designed with more rise and better tracking/speed but will.be less stable for standing. It also isn't as feature rich from a straight fishing perspective. It'll handle big water and waves much better.

More square butts. There must be something to that.

So it looks like you can’t add pedals to the Ipilot version and vice versa!?
Like the open layout of the sportsman but that tiny arse hatch is a joke, would damn sure miss having a decent size one fo sho

What's happening fellas, looking to get into the kayak world soon for inshore around nola and maybe some near offshore stuff out of orange beach to destin

Some questions I have that'd I appreciate any feedback on
Are pedals a must? Is flipping that big of a concern? Is it worth having an outrigger system? Are kayak deals hard to come by?

Any and all advice is appreciated

I'm kind of in the same situation but not looking to take a kayak off shore.

From what I've read and understand
1. yes definitely get pedal
2. Kayaks are much more stable these days. Different widths, lengths, and under hull shape all factor into stabilty.
3. I don't think outriggers are necessary if you purchase a kayak geared towards stability
4. Tons of used kayaks out there on FB and other resources. You will have to get over the hump mentally of paying $1,500 + (used) for a good pedal drive kayak that you will want to take offshore as they will be the larger models. New models from the bigger brands (Hobie, Jackson, Native, etc..) will more likely be $2-$3k +.

If you're fishing Inshore and Offshore I would suggest pedals. The current and tidal movement can get rough quick. Most (but not all) on the coast have Hobies. The more north you go the more variety you'll see. Just my .02.

I wouldn't say pedals are a must but they're certainly a huge improvement over paddling, unless you buy a Jackson FD drive, then just paddle . I paddled for ~4 years before making the swap, before I'd average 5-6 miles a trip with the occasional 10 mile trip, now with pedals covering 10 miles in a day is a pretty regular occurrence. It's also nice when working a bank to be able to move with a rod in your hand instead of a paddle, you'll vastly increase the amount of time you have a bait in the water with pedals. Pedal kayaks are also now cheaper and easier to come by than they were ~5 years ago, you can get into a decent boat with pedals new in the $1800 range new, and even less if you're willing to shop for a used deal. Several pedal kayaks out there to be had used starting in the $1200+ range.

Flipping is/isn't a concern. Of course no one wants to flip but the risk is always there. In my ~6 years of doing this I haven't flipped/fallen out, with that being said I'll probably do so this weekend.

No to outriggers, most all fishing kayaks, minus the super cheap ones, are relatively stable and outriggers aren't needed. I've only ever seen one guy kayak fishing south Louisiana with outriggers, and he was a big fella in way too small of a kayak. The added drag also made him slow as hell when paddling.

Deals are easy, especially if you're looking for something used. Like mentioned about you can find pedal kayaks relatively cheap compared to what you could just a few years ago.

Yes

Not really for most fishing model kayaks. Most fishing models are a bit wider. Wider = more stability, but you sacrifice a little on speed. I've had my PA for almost 2 years and haven't flipped it. Just make sure you keep your gear secured...inside hatches, tied down or leashed so you don't lose it if you do happen to flip.

No. In my opinion, outriggers would just be in the way while fishing.

You can sometimes get some good deals on demo models. Or keep an eye on Facebook marketplace for used ones.

Hobie Pro Angler is probably going to be at the top of the list if you're looking to do inshore marshes and be able to go offshore.

ETA: I'd recommend demoing a few before you buy. I know Massey's (NOLA) and Pack & Paddle (Lafayette) have demo days locally every so often. I'm sure Backpacker (BR) probably does too. Everything Kayak (Gulfport) has a nice selection of yaks and accessories and they have a pool inside their store that you can test out a kayak in.

Where are you located? If near Lafayette Pack & Paddle has their Beer & Gear night tomorrow that's worth checking out followed by their big demo day on Saturday when you can test out basically everything they sell.

I'm actually wanting to swing by demo day, mainly to try the FD one more time. Might try the 360 too, even though I have no intention of buying one.

I'm not buying one, I'm actually quite content with my Compass, even with it's forward-only drive. I just had such a terrible experience with the Cruise FD being a piece of shite when I rented one that I'm really curious if the one I had was just an early version and they've actually made improvements on the newer ones.

Yeah my model was a 2017 and really like the layout and was easy in the water but once you got in any amount of current it was a joke
The rudder steering needs to be addressed also, those rods would get stuck if you turned all the way in either direction

I've still have never been in one. Do you get used to the up/down steering?
