About time for a bump. I'm going to dust off the 9 weight Saturday and wade a local flat to see if I can trick a few reds. Anybody been lately?

Just got back from Costa Rica. We were targeting roosters and had several shots but never hooked up. Caught some mahi and a huge needlefish.

I probably won't target roosters in CR on the fly again. Having to tease them up then swap to fly makes it a pretty difficult game compared to what I know about Baja roosters.

We also did a trip down around Palm Beach on dock lights. Holy shite is that fun fishing. Sight fishing to nice snook, jacks, etc.. That was money well spent.

Other than that, it's all fresh warmwater for us most of the year. My son did get a scholarship on a Fish4Change trip to Roatan for flats fishing in July. I keep asking if they don't need an extra chaperone. Then he's moving out to Durango for college, and I won't have my fishing buddy around anymore... but at least I'll have all my fishing and tying gear to myself again.

Just got back from a week in Crooked Island in the Bahamas. Weather was a little iffy but still caught a lot of bonefish. No permit in the flats yet but we were looking for them.

DIY or with guide? Crooked is on my short list. I've heard the guides down there are pretty hostile towards the DIY guys though.

Guides. Have been a few times and gotten to know the guides so always like to use them. I know Acklins right next door is supposed to be some of the best DIY and a lot more opportunities. Crooked would be hard to DIY based on where the flats are and there is no place to rent a car.

Nice. I'm heading to the Bahamas in a month. Hoping for decent weather and big fish still up on flats.

Fished catfish lake area last Friday. Lots of perfect slots in shallow clean water. Probably caught 15 or so on a solo trip. They were all super hungry.

Good luck!

Got out Saturday morning looking for redfish. I was parked and ready to go before the sun came up but so was the wind. Really not a conducive day for sight fishing. Didn't get a bite, but also only got one knot from a tailing loop and was hitting my target out to 60' with regularity (ended up doing a lot of blind casting). Felt really good to get out there, despite getting skunked. Surprised myself with my casting considering I probably haven't pulled it out in 2-3 years. Already looking forward to the weekend

5 wt 9 ft is my overall favorite sized rod up here. But I have a 4 and a 6 as well. I like my 8 wt for the salt water. I dont fish much bigger than that on most occasions. Wish I had the need to use a 9 or 10 wt more often s . n

Been catching some big stripers around Alabama the last few weeks. Heading to Puerto Rico in a few weeks for a wedding and plan to tarpon fish for a day while I’m there.

Are you going with a guide? We went to ozarks last June on a smallmouth trip but the the places we wanted to fish got blown out badly by some storms while we were there so we went to the white for a day.

Nah, we make this trip 2-3 times a year. I do know of a few good ones up there if you need one.

I don't, thank you tho. We had two rafts up there and we were the only people not running jet boats and side drifting nymphs so it was a miserable time for us

There use to be so many more fly fishers on the water. Now it’s mostly drift fishing.

Even the fly anglers and guides often resort to the drift fish nymphing pretty often these days, especially in high water.

Got out to Beaver with my son on Saturday. We had a lot of rain overnight, so the water was discolored. It's the first time my son has truly out fished me since we started fishing together (that didn't involve a guided trip with limited shots and me letting him take the majority of the shots on game fish or me helping him get rigged out and untangling him and such when he was younger).

He was fishing articulated streamers, and I was going with dual nymph rigs. After he was outfishing me 2:1 for the first hour or so, I swapped over to streamers as well, and we had a ball, landing some nice 18" fish on Beaver tailwaters (which is a pretty nice fish for there).

You need to try Panama closer Cambutal area. There are many chances at roosters shallow off the rocks and you don't need to tease them up. A lot of jacks though will fight for that fly. Also have a chance at a black snook where the rivers enter the ocean. Some are giants.
