Not sure if outdoor board is correct place but here goes. I rescued a big 85lb Australian Shepard from the streets 3 years ago. Brought him to the vet to get checked out and the dr. said he was fine but he was old. He guessed from looking at his teeth that he was about 10 years old. Would make him 13 now. He doesnt really act old. im not sure what to think. He must of been trained/owned because he is a well mannered dog. Other than some hip/joint deterioration arthritus he seems fine. Tried then to find his owner yada Yada. Here is this dog's quirk.
Everytime that bad weather is coming, he senses the weather sometimes up to a full day ahead, starts panting profusely, will stand around like he is lost and/or gets fully ridden with anxiety. He feels the need to run off and he does run away into the neighboorhood. This usually results in me going find him(happens couple times a week). Other times he just a normal dog that hangs out, loves to jump in the truck and ride and waits for his big daily meal.
What's wrong with him?

That breed is notorious for freaking out with weather. Thunder will make them run like Forrest Gump

This started around 6 mos ago? Beforehand it didnt seem like a problem. In the past he just wanted to run off and piss on a few mailboxes because he was bored being inside of a fence. Then he would come back after a 15/20 minute galavant. Now i have to go find him. Now he only does it when weather goes bad. He hates to take a bath when i bathe but that mfer will run in the rain like a crazy person and come back soaked and muddy. Its like he goes into another state of mind and can't come down. I have to give him meds lately.

buy him a thunder vest and see if it works

Ill have to look that up.
It doesnt even have to be thunder or lightning. He senses the drop/rise in barometric pressure and starts panting like he is in bad pain and starts acting weird like he is in the pit at woodstock.
Runs straight for the hole in the fence and runs away.

Weather anxiety is very common in all breeds. As dogs age it may appear and worsen. Trazadone is a great solution for it if you can get ahead of the storm by a few hours each time. Gabapentin is a good daily anxiety med for them as well if your perfect timing of the approaching storm isn't feasible. Both are easy to get from the vet.

Trazadone
I suspect this is possibly how he got seperated from his original owner. I know he had been lost for a few months based on what a couple people in the area told me about him.

I don't know what to do for your dog, maybe try a thunder vest, but that is a bigass dog.

My last lab got worse with thunder as he got older. You could shoot a gun around he and he would't flinch. A single rumble in the distance and he wouldn't kennel. If it was during the night he would try to tear out of the kennel. Usually ended up having to let him sleep in the bed.

I can vouch for that. We have a rescue beagle not sure of his age, but about 6 months ago he started getting anxious during thunderstorms. He just walks paces around in the house panting like a mf'er. It's a pain in the arse at night because he wants in and out of the bed the whole time.

Try baby liquid Benadryl. Can Google for amount to give. I have to give to my house dog several hours before storms hits giving it time to work

Thunder jacket plus Benedryl.

talk to your vet. There are meds you can give the dog to help with the anxiety from storms. Our dogs do this too.

i thought he was another breed but vet said he's a sheperd
That's bigger than the normal range for Aussies. That's on the biggish end of the German shepherd range.

Uh, why not fix the fence?

Happens often, pets go missing during 4th of july and New Years because they bolt from the anxiety and stress.
