Question, what happens when Hawkeye hits her prey? Is she able to kill it with her talons or do you usually have to finish it off with that stick?
Unless, he gets hung up in a tree with a squirrel or I can't find him in the brush, the game is still alive when I get there. I finish it off to be as humane as possible. Squeeze the squirrels and stretch the rabbits ( grab their neck and pull their back legs which breaks their neck easily).

Possibly Tom and Jen Coulson. I don't know them personally, but they're well known and respected in the falconry community. They just published a great book on Harris hawks..

Your redtail is more camouflaged than the rabbits.
I wouldn't have believed that until just now when I saw those last two photos.
Fantastic.

It's amazing how well they blend in. If he wasn't wearing bells I'd lose him every time out.

Man, I enjoy your videos and posts here...thanks for keeping this going!...
I didn't actually realize that this was confined to a season...how do you keep the hawk in practice, if you can't do it in real situations?...also, do you have to just buy meat to feed during the off season?....

Some people exercise them during the offseason by making them do "jump ups" for food. I may give that a try. There's also still daily weighing which help keep them accustomed to being handled. But, when the season starts, there will be a period of getting back in form. It doesn't take long though. As far as hunting, he's born knowing how to do that. He may be a little rusty on how to work with me, but it shouldn't take much reminding. This will be my first time keeping a hawk through the molt, so I don't fully know what to expect either.
As far as food, yeah, you can buy rats, quail, chicks, etc to feed if you need them. Right now, I think I have enough rabbits in the freezer to last until the season opens again on oct 1.

Are your long range plans to stick with Red Tails or try other species such as Harris' etc?
Posted on 4/3/13 at 11:24 am to webstew
I'll try other birds. Harris hawks are great and I may try them eventually. But, living in the southeast, it's tough to beat a red tail for squirrels and rabbits. Harris are probably their only equal for that game in our terrain. But, I'd like to fly a Cooper's hawk at birds and maybe even rabbits. If we ever move west, like we've been planning, I'd like to try a goshawk. I'd even like to try a kestrel or Merlin on birds.
But for now, I'm very happy with red tails. I've thought about adding a cooper's next year, but realistically, I only have time to fly one bird right. And I want at least one more season with Hawkeye.

Alright, I'm not Spielberg, but I spent the weekend going through MANY hours of gopro video, cutting out the highlights, and stitching them together. It's over 40 minutes long, so I know most of you aren't interested, but I thought I'd add it to this thread for the few of you that are.

Would love to watch it, Teague, but it won't open for me. I'm on a PC. Firefox says it can't find the address.

Hmmm, I'll try to fix it tonight. Youtube is blocked at work.

couple of songs were great, the rest sucked(IMHO needs more Jimi!) but badass video none the less.
Is there a registry I can find someone to apprentice under here in NE Florida?
