DTRooster, I know what you mean. I used to see hawks, but since I've gotten into this sport, I'm always on the lookout for them. I see them everywhere now.
Wow. Interesting. Red tails usually aren't that aggressive around their nests. Most of the time, they just fly overhead and scream. You must have found a mean one. Haha. Goshawks are famous for attacking intruders in this fashion.

A couple of years ago I had a redtail hawk nesting in my woods. I was outside chipping some golf balls and the hawk glided in from my back and hit me in the head. I found the nest and stayed away. About two weeks later I was trying to get my dog to come back from chasing some deer in the woods. The hawk did the same move but this time clawed both sides of my head...blood running down my ears. Ha..my wife would not even go out on the deck the rest of the spring...

I thought it was a redtail but might be wrong. She would sit in a tree about twenty yards away from the nest just watching. The following year she would sit on a branch about 15 yards from my deck in the early morning and would hop down to the ground. I'm guessing she was eating worms or some large bugs on the surface.

It probably was. It's just not common for them to be that aggressive.

The other thread reminded me I hadn't posted any photos in a while. So, for those of you that like hawks and dead things, here's some photos.
The squeal from this rabbit brought in another hawk that landed about 15 feet over our heads for a minute. Ava wasn't going to share.
Got this one just before the rain got too bad.

I trained a hummingbird to come to a feeder once

Once again, your pics are badass.
I look forward to seeing new ones every time the thread is bumped.

Had a hummingbird land on my palm one day. Unbelievable you may say. I have a picture of it just staring at me. He/She chilled for about 2 minutes looking at me. I was able to get my face within a few inches before it flew away.

Not sure if anyone has asked this in the thread yet, but have you considered putting a GoPro on the bird?
Is that even possible?
Pretty entertaining thread btw. Awesome pics.

Yeah, I think I've decided to keep her at least one more season. She was doing extremely well for a while, but then things got weird. I've only recently figured out that it's an issue with her weight management (so my own damn fault). I've wasted several weeks trying to figure it out, but I think we're back on track now. I think she'd have caught twice as much game in the past 6 weeks, if I'd figured it out sooner. But, she's still on pace to beat what my male did last year, even with a shorter season.

Nah, that's too much effort for me. A gopro is really too big anyway. A big hawk, like my red tail, could probably fly fine with it, but with how bulky it would be, I think it would be nearly impossible to get a good mount. But, it has been done with smaller cameras. If I think about it tonight, I'll try to find what I think is the best one out there - at least the best one with a red tail - and post it here.

How quickly does she kill the squirrels or rabbits?

Well, I go straight to her and dispatch them myself. Once in a while she'll catch a squirrel in a tangle of branches and hang up there until it's dead. I'd say most of the time it takes a minute or two with a squirrel. It really just depends on where she's gripping it. They kill by squeezing (or eating) them to death. A squirrel will die surprisingly fast if you squeeze his chest cavity. Rabbits are a bit different. I don't know how long that would take, because those are always caught on the ground and I go ahead and kill them to prevent any unnecessary suffering. Just from what I've observed, I'd say the majority of rabbits caught by hawks in the wild aren't dead when the hawk starts eating. But, rabbits do go into shock and die very easily.

I wasn't really worried about the mammals but I could see her getting into a tangle with some larger squirrels (Fox) or a rabbit.
Didn't know if she poked holes in just the right spot or what.

She looks like she knows where the stop buttons are pretty well
usually one hook on the chest and one to the head
