I recently bought a 270 wsm for deer hunting. Very excited about it, but comparing the WSM's to their long action counterparts, it got me to thinking.

What gives the WSM more velocity than the regular Magnums, shooting the same weight bullet? Is it just more powder loaded, or some kind of physics my brain can't understand? It seems that the case is the same diameter, but obviously much shorter.

From Chuckhawks...

Cartridge/Weight Muzzle Velocity/Energy
7mm Mag/150gr 3110/3221
7mm WSM/150gr 3200/3410

300 Mag/180gr 2960/3501
300 WSM/180gr 2970/3526

There's obviously not much difference, but one would thing the short action would be slower if anything.

Just interested in learning from some of you ballistics and reloading experts.

From what I remember reading when they first came out, it has to do with the powder burning more efficiently. More or the powder burns may be a better description.
I have the 270WSM and love it. Dad has a 300WSM that is BAD!

More powder + small case mouth = higher pressure

Higher pressure = higher velocity

The short part is nice because it keeps the action, bolt, chamber, etc. short.

I've found that my 300wsm will usually shoot a little slower the n the 300 winnys even after adjusting for differences in barrel length. Usually around the 100fps range and that coincides with most ballistic information I've seen out there. The only advantage I see is the benefit of a short action rifle and an unbelted case. The trade off is the tendency of the short fat case to not feed smoothly. The 270 wsm is starting to make a little more sense to me with the arrival of the heavier VLD bullets with increased BCs. Still, the 6.5 WSM is a LOT sexier.

Lpman, what you're saying doesn't make sense. It's actually smaller case volume with the same opening. Like has been said, it's presumably from a more efficient powder burn and increased shoulder angle (I think).

Still, most info I've read had the shortys shooting slightly slower then their full length counterparts. Which has been my experience.

I think Winchester's claim with the short mags was that there was improved accuracy over the other cartridges

WSM has a shorter case bigger around case for the powder to burn quicker vs a longer skinnier case takes longer to burn.

They claimed more efficiency when they first came out, but there was a guy who wrote an article in G&A back then who was very skeptical. There is the advantage of the short action rifle, but they still have 24 inch barrels, so the gun is not that short. If you shorten the barrel more than that, you lose the benefit of the extra powder. They are good cartridges that deliver a lot of energy.

Theoretically, short actions are stiffer and therefor more accurate than long actions.
