Squirrel hunting near BR

Haven’t hunted in many years. I’d like to get out and kill a few for a gumbo. Any place near BR worth a trip?

Yeah a few places. Sherburne used to be really good but I haven't squirrel hunted there in a couple of years. Cat Island and Tunica Hills are good. Be ready to climb some hills if you go to Tunica. Used to do well at Pearl River, too. Yancy is a little further but also good.

Thanks. Hills are fine. I hunted near Angola back in the day.

Wherever you end up, I would recommend spraying down your pants with a good tick repellent and be aware of snakes.

Most of the WMAs will have an unable squirrel population. The dry parts of Maurepas wma, cat island, sherburne would be my first tries.

Maurepas swamp wma, French Settlement tract. Lots of cypress/tupelo gum swamp with mixed pine/hardwoods. Squirrel hunting is easy off King George Bay road, just walk any of the atv trails and you’ll get into some good areas you can stalk or sit and wait under a big feed tree. Get your free HIP and black belly whistling duck permit and use steel shot because you’ll probably get some shots on the squealers too.
