Pretty sure it’s a recently shed Dekay’s, never seen one this distinctly colored, most I see are a more mottled brown. Understand now how they came to be misidentified as ground rattlers, the pic doesn’t do justice to how gold it was and the strike posture was pretty mean looking for a tiny snake.

Garters often have an attitude.

I hate snakes but that one looks kinda cartoonish and cool.
My buddies little girl got popped by a copperhead last week. She spent a few days in the hospital and received multiple vials of antivenom to reduce swelling. Full recovery but dealing with the bite itself and the draconian protocols only allowing one parent in the PICU had him pretty worked up.

I had a little one in my yard this weekend. As I was cutting grass something by by foot caught my attention, it was a little garder snake. I don’t know how it was killed by the lawn mower. But he was passed off.

quote:I've made this mistake twice here. It's mainly due to the variation in Garters. The ones in CENLA are damn near indistinguishable from Ribbon snakes. So, the eastern ones look like DeKay's to me.
Pretty sure it’s a recently shed Dekay’s
