we just had a load of pipe come into the yard from houston and there was a chicken snake that hitched a ride in one of the joints of pipe.

The pressing question here is did you kill it or let it free?

The vertical stripes under the eyes looks like every water snake pic I've found on goodle. The mocs have horizontal stipes.

I'm on board with the water snake crowd.

I agree, water snake fronting, not cottonmouth. But I would kill it in the heat of battle.

No discernible pattern at all. Looks like yellow underbelly.

I knew water snakes would coil and act aggressive, but didn't know they could flatten and broaden their heads like that.

I think it's a moccasin pretending to be a water snake in the hopes that the herpatologists on this board misidentify it.

Cotton mouth.

It's not that simple at all. MANY non-venomous snakes will flatten their heads out like this when threatened. Some, even have somewhat triangular heads when not threatened.

Here is a harmless hognosed snake:

And a harmless yellow-bellied water snake:

It is true that pit vipers have triangular heads. But Coral snakes, here in the US don't, and many venomous snakes around the world don't. And many non-venomous snakes can mimic either.

And as many of you probably know, lots of non-venomous snakes will rattle their tails in the leaves to mimic a rattlesnake. I've seen rat snakes do it, king snakes do it, and even racers do it.

I would argue that most black panther sightings are actually squatches mimicking panthers. That would move squatches into the #1 spot, imo.

Considering how close it looks to a cottonmouth, I think a failure to kill it is bad as it shows some proclivity to not killing cottonmouths.

Very true. The cottonmouths are close to taking over the world. I know (knew) 8 little old ladies, 14 children, 12 OB'ers, and 74 dogs that are gone because of organized moccasin attacks.
