The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission, at its regular monthly meeting, voted to add acreage to both Maurepas Swamp Wildlife Management Area and Sandy Hollow WMA.

By act of donation, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries had previously acquired 4,960 acres in Ascension and St. James parishes known as the "Boyce Tract." The commission's action made that tract part of Maurepas Swamp WMA, and opened it to public access.

The WMA has grown rapidly, and now totals more than 120,000 acres. When Maurepas Swamp was first declared a WMA in 2001, it was 62,000 acres in size.

The commission also approved tacking on a much smaller chunk of land -- called the Gewalt Tract -- to Sandy Hollow. The addition of the 480-acre tract expands the WMA to more than 4,000 acres in total size.

Sandy Hollow WMA is entirely contained within Tangipahoa Parish.

Yea it used to be full of them. I haven't shot at a big duck back there in years.

I wonder how much WMA land will be considered enough?

My buddys pawpaw tells us constantly we are wasting time duck hunting maurepas wma nowdays. He said back in 80's they would kill as many mallards as they could carry every trip

Plenty of people are doing it.

Lord help us if the ducks ever come back. It won't be safe to be within 10 miles of maurepas WMA

Hadn't seen a map to know what's in that wma, or seen what's been recently added, but if maurepas wma is that cypress and tupelo swamp between I 10 and lake maurepas in st James/John or ascension parish, the young folks in this thread would not believe the ducks that used to hit that swamp. Garyville canal and reserve canal run right through it.

Back in the day (80s), we used to:

1. Park truck on I 10
2. Pole pirogue 250 yards into swamp
3. Put a dozen decoys out/kick water/make ripple
4. Absolutely slay mallards, grays, wigeons and woodies.

Duckman I and II were filmed there, off if reserve canal.

Salvania got loose in that swamp, all the ducks left.

Edit: the crazy thing is the very few ppl were hunting them. All the folks in garyville hunting club (had a friend who's grandad was one of the founders - that was our in) were deer hunting in there. A good year was that whole camp killing line 8 deer. Was nuts. Literally thousands of ducks, with very little pressure. To my knowledge, there was only 1 perm blind on all of garyville hunting club.
