I got a 2017 6 hp Merc (Tohatsu inside) I'll sell you. Has internal tank you can use as a reserve.

Wouldn't surprise me if all outboards that size where made by Tahatsu

It’s ridiculous the cost of a small outboard. I bought a 2.5 hp Yamaha for a 10 ft boat we use to service oxygen buoys on the fish farm. I think it was 1800 bucks

I remember when cabelas had 5hp Briggs outboards for like 500 bucks. Which were actually good little outboards for the price. Air cooled so could run in salt or brackish water without messing up the engine and they hauled arse for a 5hp

Suzuki makes some killer small engines and theirs are usually the lightest in each horsepower. Their 6hp is only 52lbs. I've had a lot of experience with their 2.5hp (only 29lbs) and it's been great.

I’m not familiar with them. Figured being Chinese made its crap but the price tag is attractive though

Get what you pay for. Go with Honda or Tohatsu. Just not reliable enough for me

That would actually be cool if you could buy a kit to make those like you can for the Thai mud motors.

T, G, & Y stores used to sell a small, air-cooled, outboard with a Clinton engine as the powerhead. I wish I had bought one years ago.

I have a Yamaha 6 - if I'm alone, it moves a lot aster than you'd think! Starts right up every damn time too.

ETA: It's on a 14' Academy boat.

I bought a Mercury 3.5 hp for my 10 ft Grumman aluminum a couple years ago and have been very happy with it. Costs $1100 delivered to my front porch. This year I had to pull the carb and clean jets due to ethanol fuel. I plan to spend $225 for a kit consisting of 5 hp carb and aluminum prop which reports indicate a good increase in performance from an easy upgrade.

I bought the 2.5 on your recommendation a few years ago, my gripes with it are:

1: Gear shift is on the side instead of the front, so when you lean over the transom to put it in gear I feel like I'm about to get thrown out the back.

2: There is no reverse

3: The tiller is too short. Or maybe my arms are too short?

4: Trim can't be adjusted on the fly, requires tools.

Everything else is awesome. It sips gas, has a lot more power than I expected from a 2.5, and as you mentioned, is only 29 pounds. Starts on the first pull. Although, I only use tru-fuel in it. Not one molecule of ethanol has ever entered this motor. That's probably key to all small engines though.

Fair enough. You definitely sacrifice some features to get the lower weight and portability. On a motor that small, I'm usually more concerned about being able to hump it up and down a steep bayou bank or .25mile to a commando launch.

And as you pointed you, she fires up every time. My old merc (tohatsu under the hood) was finicky sometimes, especially on colder morning. The suzuki is just a hair less powerful though. I think it has the lowest displacement of any of the name brand 2.5hp motors and as such it doesn't get quite the umph. The merc had better initial acceleration and slightly higher top end speed.

I found something similar online. I may buy it. I'm sure you could replace the Chinese-made power head with a Briggs or Honda once the original craps out.

The issue with those is that it sounds like a lawnmower is in your ear. Same as surface drives and go devils but without the longer handle to create distance. Overall maintenance is generally easier though.

I have a Yamaha 6 hp on a 12’ flatboat. Really gets up and goes.
