I honestly prefer this. The 2.5hp merc I owned prior had a R gear but it sucked. It was super jumpy going into reverse and you never had anything close to full power. The suzuki spin 180 works much better.

I don't know if Tanaka still makes little air cooled outboards, but the two I had were rock solid.

For larger motors, I’ve had Suzuki, Yamaha, and Mercury. Flip a coin, they all run and they all break down eventually.

Just bought a 9.8 Tohatsu on a 14ft War Eagle. My wife could pull the cord half way and it starts. And it has a electric start to boot.
