My first few deer were killed with a 20G 870. My dad use to load my gun up with slug, buckshot slug. One of the properties I hunt is really thick and I’m starting to think my best bet is to carry a shotgun with me into some of the thicker parts of property. Haven’t used a shotgun for deer since those first deer.

I have an 870 12G and an old Ithaca 12. Probably going to go with the 870 since it can hold a 3 inch (probably not necessary though). What have any of y’all been shooting when using a shotgun? Brand, slug, buckshot?

I've always used Remington Buckshot 00 if you're still hunting, Number 4 if dog hunting.

I have had great success with 3" Federal 4B buckshot on deer and pigs over recent years. I shoot it out of my A300 with an extra full turkey choke.

Not sure all buckshot sizes would work through a turkey choke. I’m sure manufacturers have suggestions on choke sizes.

Did you have to light a wick or did it have a pull string?

I’ve had better luck over the years with 4 buck over 00. Pattern your gun also, they won’t all pattern the same.

Question for the board: what’s the farthest shot to take with standard 3” 00 Buckshot? 50 yards? 75?
